Indigo Dyeing is a practice you don’t often hear explored through a Caribbean context. As @fibrelegacy shared, enslaved Africans brought the expert dyeing knowledge to the Caribbean but were later banned from using dyeing vats for personal use. This workshop and Sam’s wider practice as an artist is an act of resistance and remembrance of a material and process that African and Caribbean people were culturally and cosmologically tied to 💙 Threads of the Caribbean 3/3… for now 😌

Yesterday I facilitated a workshop at @bowarts that was part of the public programme for @katanderson26 incredible exhibition Mark of Cane which ‘explores the impact of sugar on the African Caribbean Diaspora, confronting the haunting legacies of the Industrial Revolution and the Transatlantic Slave Trade’. Like sugar, indigo has a haunting legacy and a complex history. At one point it was the most valuable commodity and was referred to as ‘blue gold’. Its value sparked trade wars and violent conditions for production, by the end of its colonial involvement it became known as ‘The Devil’s Dye’. During this workshop we also discussed its used and presence in West Africa as a material that wielded social, political, and cosmological influence 🌿
