Al-Aghbani is a traditional Syrian embroidery technique originating in Damascus over 150 years ago, famous for its intricate, nature-inspired motifs (leaves, flowers, arabesque) stitched with silk, gold, or silver threads on cotton, linen, or organza. Commonly used for tablecloths and clothing, this art is primarily produced by women in Duma. Although the manufacturing system that entrusted each stage of the craft has become fragmented by war and displacement, Syrian women are reviving this craft to support their families and keep the tradition alive.
๐๐๐ค๐ฃ๐๐ saved pieces of Aghabani her mother was throwing out to cut odd, magical pattern shapes that look like they were meant for ๐ข ๐ฃ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐บ but not any kind of familar or recognizable body. Her sweeping installations coax rich hues from nature and combine them with botanical motifs and implied architectural and figural gesture- elegant, dramaturgical, seductive and sometimes flawed in a way that registers as uncanny and intensely magnetic.
๐ We are currently in discussion to place the installation, yet serious inquiries about the work are welcomed.

Growing up in Great Neck, im familiar with the salt marshes stretching out into the horizon shortly after leaving the station on Middle Neck rd towards the city. This natural landscape was ultimately protected by the activism of Long Islander Aurora Gariess of Little Neck, NY.
Here ๐๐จ๐ has included images from Gariessโ archives (the first one is her giving public educational walks along the phragmite covered shoreline with middle schoolers) within a matrix of quilted friezes aligning the harmonious labors of environmental protection & reproductive work. Iโve also patched in bits of Aurora Gariessโ story from Udalls Cove Preservation Committee to honor this Long Island protagonist and visionary.

Invincibility, strength, renown; unimpeachable, praiseworthy, perfect. One can aspire and hold these ideals up, but for any human being to be in the world, with connection to other human beings, a little vulnerability in the form of a tear, a rip, a cascade of rips, or one glaring, gaping wound is a powerful portal to meaningful attachment.
After taking in the physically tattered, yet lacelike strength and internal integrity that keeps this piece intact and flowing, I asked what the swirly words were and ๐ผ๐ฃ๐รฉ๐ก๐๐๐ told me the story. Upon meeting with Martha and Mary after the loss of their brother, Lazarus, Jesus held back from showing his might and power in raising him from the dead, he chose to first sit down and share in their sorrow. Jesus Wept.

Industrialized, technologized and simultaneously overrun by tall, nonchalant phragmites, the feather-like reeds which thrive on NYC coastlines, these photographic snippets from newspapers and archives of Ridgewood and Queens are embedded by ๐๐จ๐ on to old bed sheets. The supporting textile has itโs own history and proclivities, which enrich the cyanotype in unexpected ways and conflate personal and local accounts of a shared place.

This piece layers motifs taken in Medellรญn onto a photograph of the NYC subway wall; framed by barbed wire along the edges. It reflects the instability and precarity of bordersโnot only in the U.S., but also in how American influence has reshaped Medellรญnโs cultural landscape through gentrification triggering cultural homogenization.
