I enjoy most slots, running times and hours. But openings hold a special place in my heart. You get to start with a clean canvas (aka a nearly, if not empty, room or field) and work your ways from there. You potentially grab people’s ears and listening span at their prime (aka not so overstimulated yet). And everyone is bubbling with curiosity & excitement for the afternoon, night or morning ahead. “Will I stay cool?”, “Call it a night earlier maybe?”, “Will I trip my bonks off and hug a tree?” - Anything can happen, right? It was a pleasure to open this magical stage - Floresta - at @wakinglife.pt earlier in June. Telma’s selections: Dorothy Ashby - Afro-Harping (1968) “A daring record, way ahead of its time, crossing jazz-funk with classical harp by an icon hailing from Detroit.. Bright, soulful and spiritual. The Look of Love, with a hint of bossa nova, sounds like going out on the first sunny day of spring.” Felt - Felt (1971) “Obsessed with this album from the 70s by this obscure band from Alabama, who only recorded 2 albums in 40 years. A cool blend of jazz, blues and psychedelic rock. Destination has a youthful soul-searching mood that fits the blooming season perfectly.” Popol Vuh - City Raga (1995) “This album feels like a rebirth from the group’s classic kraut/prog rock direction, straight into electronic territory. I love the blend of ambient, tribal and trance, both hypnotic and devotional all at once. Last Village feels like stepping into a pollen-induced blissful high.” Hiroma Keo’s selections: “Skee Mask - Compro (2018) This one feels like the end of winter. Lush atmospheres, sparse yet complex structure of fragile elements, just like ice melting and breaking slowly, finding its way back to life.” Boards Of Canada - Tomorrow’s Harvest (2014) “The opening track is called Gemini, which Zodiac Telma must appreciate, and the overall album feels like watching seeds germinate and grow, which might explain the album’s name.” Max Graef - Rivers Of The Red Planet (2014) “For those lazy, laid back first barbecues of the year, when the heat is already peaking just enough to make you have your first sweat while doing absolutely jackshit. Stripped back jazzy, hip hop, house beats with very warm colors and dreamy vocals.”
