They did it. End of robotics season update on the last big tournaments: Silicon Valley Signature: Semi-Finalist, California R4 State Championship: Semi—Finalist, US Open: Division Champion… and the Vex World Robotics Championship: World Champion - Team APEX.
Worlds is 584 Teams from 50 Countries, 7 divisions.
One of the strengths of this team is programming, which delivered the most consistent autonomous scoring of any team we have seen in the competition. They hit their mark from all 4 corners of the field, and pulled off solo win points when they needed to. They won their very first qualifying match with an extra win point, putting them into first place in the division and they never moved. Finished qualifying ranked #1 and choose a team from Canada, Ten-Ton Robotics, as their alliance. The goal was to win the division and make it to the St Louis Dome for the cross-division matches. They did that and then seemed to hit their stride and kept going through all the final matches.
World Champion is a huge accomplishment for Kierin and his team, but it’s also a huge deal for his LAUSD school - Irving STEAM magnet. Competition robotics is expensive - parts, entrance fees, travel, and everythign else - the school could not have been more supportive of this team and the entire program. Special thanks to his coach, Mr Valdez, who built them to be independent and strong. Thanks to all his teammates and the massive effort by the parents and volunteers to make all this happen. What an incredible ride.
Team APEX played and won the very last game of 25-26 season: Pushback. Now on to 26-27 Override and it starts all over again.

Not sure anybody asked for the Robotics update, but here it is: Kierin’s team, APEX, has been killing it. They were dominant in the early season with a perfected basket bot, but decided to redesign to better align with emerging game strategies. First time out with the new robot last weekend, they won again. We are done with 8 regional tournaments - they have 10 awards so far, including 4x tournament champion, 2x excellence awards, 2x innovate awards, 1 design award, 1 skills champion. Current world ranking is 122 of 13,220. The four biggest tournaments are left in the season - Northern California Signature event, the US Open in Iowa, the State Championships in San Diego, and the World Robotics Championship in St Luis. PS1: The first of 3 little house projects in Palm Springs. Super fun to design, this one is largely driven by the site and view. High construction cost made us cut way back on materials and finish, but it’s a really great feeling inside and out. Palm Springs feels like a permanent summer vacation.

Some projects punch above their weight and this is one of our favorites. 4 ADU’s added to an existing multifamily property - they are open and making a lot out of a little space. About 250sf each + a storage loft + roof deck. Awesome project with a team working together to deliver affordable, small, and interesting living units. Happy to see it taking shape.

One more: proud of this kid - VRC MS (Vex Robotics Competition, Middle School) update: The first reginal competition was a bit rough, but they did okay. Kierin and his team completely rebuilt their robot. Second time they made simi-finalist. Then tournament finalist. Then tournament champion. Now we are on to the US Open in Iowa and the California State final. Really outstanding focus and dedication by his team. Go Bears! @irvingsteammagnetschool
