As autumn returns so does the roost, and so does the crow family that visits early morning when Bear goes off to school. The same time as last winter. Humans can learn so much from these birds. ❤️ . . . . . . #community #crow #crows #crowroost #portlandcrows

Artwork/graphics by @bypeoni Every day, I think of Palestine throughout the day. I think of the people I met in the West Bank. I think about how their culture is so beautiful, ancient, and real (not appropriated): their music, traditions, cuisine, strength, and their humanity. And I think about how Palestine will be free—in my lifetime. ❤️❤️❤️✊✊✊✊

When Irene Tejaratchi Hess initially set out to shoot her short film, "Roost 2020 PDX," her intention was to document the beauty and mystery surrounding how crows communicate and roost. But then 2020 happened. Suddenly, she found herself filming much more than birds. "Later, when reviewing what I’d filmed, I saw connections between my original ideas and the footage of lockdown, protests, and the orange skies of the wildfires," she says. "The film explores themes like how our actions impact the environment we live in (like how tear gas affects our bodies, the crows, the river), and the beauty of the power in numbers – something crows clearly know how to do quite well." Read the full interview with Irene at the link in bio. And be sure to catch "Roost 2020 PDX" in the "More Than Human" short film collection screening this Friday, April 30 at @hollywoodtheatr , part of @theportlandecofilmfestival (of which OEC is a proud sponsor). 📸: @tejaroxy

We’re excited to share the trailer for ROOST 2020 PDX, a short film by 350PDX’s Communications Director @tejaroxy that premieres at the Portland EcoFilm Festival @theportlandecofilmfestival on 4/30 as part of the “More Than Human” program. ROOST 2020 PDX is part love story to Portland, part natural history doc. When a filmmaker sets out in 2020 to make a documentary about Portland’s crow roost, her focus shifts as dramatic events unfold. ROOST 2020 PDX weaves together seemingly disparate threads: thousands of crows gathering to roost, empty pandemic streets, tear gas clouding protests for racial justice, federal agents occupying a city, and wildfires. Oregon Environmental Council @oeconline has an interview with filmmaker Irene Tejaratchi Hess where you can learn more. Yesterday I had to film some trees for a work project, and I was just floored by the beauty all around us, all these supremely beautiful, trippy flowers blooming, and their dreamy fragrances. We live in this beautiful world, and it could be amazing, were it not for the powers that *temporarily* be. That’s what I believe - the jig is up, it has to be temporary. They’re throwing so much at us, breaking our hearts and making us sick a thousand and one ways. And I refuse. I want this beautiful world. This is not for the children to fix. Let’s go, friends.

These are photos I used to post on instagram; most from a “secret trail” near the Oregon coast. In 2020, we visited the trail and noticed a strange, bright light on the trail’s winding hill. As we approached the top, we realized why. Presently, the Trump administration wants to open 2.5 million acres of Western Oregon’s public forests to logging - - sacrificing wildlife, clean air, beautiful healing sounds, and wildfire protection. Please make your voice heard. This affects all of us - including trees, wildlife, clean water, and more. See link In bio. Comments are due by 9:00pm Monday, March 23! Please speak up. 🙏❤️🌲 #oregonforest #pnwonderland

I have to been to Iran only once. I was too young to remember very much. I do remember my grandmother. My sister, brother, and I called her “Softy Lady”, after combing her silky hair and listening to her speak in Farsi. She lived on a street in Tehran named after my father’s family. I remember dusky colors and green. Beautiful and kind people. And long drives - Tehran, Shiraz, Rasht. I remember my mother saying that when she was a little girl in Puerto Rico she read about Iran and imagined how incredible - - this ancient country, thousands of years old. And look here she was. And I remember the first time my mother visited Portland. She saw Mount Hood from the city, and said, “It’s like Iran”, because in the city of Tehran you can see the snow-capped Alborz mountains. So this is what I’m holding onto. Iran is ancient. The people are strong. The country has weathered through thousands of years. Not new. Not recently built atop bones. And I am going to go forward dreaming for the best for the people living in Iran. They prevail, as do the people of Palestine, Sudan, Cuba, the Congo, my beloved Puerto Rico and all other places that could be eden were it not for depraved, old men. We prevail. Wishing peace to all on Nowruz and every day thereafter. ❤️🌸🔥
