This world lost a great man yesterday. Without Dave Boelman, Teehee’s as we know it would not exist. It was only through his willingness to venture into the unknown that so many years of great shows and unforgettable nights ever happened. He was the quiet dreamweaver of Des Moines comedy and of countless other projects throughout this city. Even after accomplishing a lifetime’s worth of honest work in a real career, Dave chose to invest his time, his money, and his sanity into people who sometimes did not even believe in themselves. It was a gift so great I still struggle to comprehend it, and one that could never be repaid.
Over the last six months, there was not a day I spent with Dave when he did not talk about comedy. He would ask about the latest open micers or continue to chase the new club we had drawn up and dreamed about. While his body was fighting multiple cancers and a failing liver, his mind stayed fiercely committed to seeing that project through.
As it became clear that Dave was not going to make it out alive, he spoke often about legacy. He wanted to get the new club done for that legacy. I told him it had already been earned long before. His legacy is one of unfathomable generosity, of believing in people’s potential, and of striving for greatness in whatever you do. It is a legacy that requires no brick or mortar. It already stands, and it will stand forever.
Dave was like a big brother to me, and he changed my life in more ways than I can count. I will miss sharing headphones on airplanes, calling each other in the dead of night to talk about Goodfellas, and dreaming together while we were still awake. He was one of the greatest people I have ever known, and I will miss him every day.
If there is another place beyond here where goodness resides, I know Dave will be there, laughing loudly, telling Aplington stories, and making friends.
I love you, Dave. Rest in peace, my friend.
