my thesis show, titled "Pilgrimage (Message for the Atlantic), will be opening this Wednesday April 15th!! Hope to see you there!
.
"Pilgrimage (Message for the Atlantic)" is an exploration into the Black past, or rather, the absence of one. The Black-American experience is one that lacks universal land, language, and specificity–our ancestry is amorphous, lost to the roiling water and the dark depths of the Atlantic, where African bodies met the cold ocean and had their cultural ties severed with every mile sailed away from the Motherland. Black-American culture is rich, lively, and real, but its origins are murky; in our search for our ancestors we find ourselves at the shore, the foamy tide lapping at our feet. "Message for the Atlantic" is a study in speculation, in grieving what is lost and unrecoverable, and reconciling with a lack of beginning. Through objects, video, sound, and ritual, this exhibition pieces together the void of Black origin and traverses Black becoming and evolution, utilizing personal archives and known history to construct a past, a present, and a future. This is a space to yearn for what was lost to the Atlantic, to grieve and eat and be together, to “tend to the Black dead and dying”–to be in the Wake.

Notes on Dispossession (near King Drive): Through pieces of interviews with family members and photographic records of the past, artist Tech Nix attempts to piece together the fragments of his family history.
Samanala Yakku Deviyan Soyayi (Butterfly Demons Search for god): Follows two Butterfly Demons, creatures born from the derogatory language used to identify and describe queer people in Sri Lanka, through their ascension to nirvana, a state of euphoria only accessible by way of physical transformation (trans-ness).

skin between your teeth | Opening October 29th | Group show at the Commons Gallery, 34 Stuyvesant Street with @nino.online & @spygrrrl

come see our show! pregame halloween with us! 👹
.
description: "skin between your teeth" is an exploration of the relationship between the body and the spaces it occupies–we break open the body and turn it inside out, spilling it onto the gallery floor. Through this obliteration and reconstruction, we attempt to embrace the way horror and queerness have been intertwined throughout history and satirize it, play with it, and exaggerate it. Informed by horror media like "Carrie" and "Interview with a Vampire" along with camp horror in the drag and ballroom worlds, we recreate and reimagine the typically serene area of the home–the dining room–and reframe elements of the home through a lens of the grotesque. Along with this, "skin between your teeth" is a love letter to “craft”–using almost entirely ceramics and textiles, we seek to make space for these underrepresented methods in the art world.
i had the opportunity to study ceramics for two weeks in the origin place of porcelain and blue and white painting, jingdezhen!
was incredibly transformative and inspiring, really focused on exploring and trying new techniques i've never been able to do before. have some work to show from my time there, so stay tuned :)
