Our @abeekeepersgarden rescued a solitary #italian Honeybee Queen ( #apismellifera ligustica) on Winter Solstice in mid-December.
She came from a scientific facility who deemed her too โaggressiveโ for her original agricultural keeper.
@teaswithbees and I gently created a #hive split from the body of a stronger bee-ing. We asked for a bit of honey, a bit of pollen, and a few hundred nurse bees & larvae.
Over the next few weeks, Iโd sit with the new hive to listen carefully, to witness their growth and preparation for #spring ๐

Yesterday, the temperatures were a high of 81 degrees in December here in east LA! One of our wild hives still has drone activity, which I find to be incredible ~
this footage was captured at the end of October, as we prepared the hives for winter hibernation.
Slide 3: do you see the #varroa mite secured tightly onto the head of the bee? Comparatively, the size of the mite :: bee is like having a large golfball attached to your body. Could you imagine that?
These past three years, Iโve learned to observe, listen, breathe and be with the bees in their seasonal rhythms. & there is still so much to discover, to witness, to study, to try to understand the phenomena before me.
Iโve always desired to share with you what Iโm learning, and after the loss of one of our hives to colony collapse in October, the fire to share is burning brightly.
& so, Iโve placed pen to paper, and am working on writing an introductory field guide, which I hope to have complete within the year ๐ฑ
