Tobacco and nicotine significantly impair fertility in both men and women by damaging eggs and sperm. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), quitting smoking is essential for couples trying to conceive, as smokers experience infertility at roughly twice the rate of non-smokers.

The World Health Organization (WHO) today issues a strong warning over the rapid global expansion of nicotine pouch products, which are being aggressively marketed to adolescents and young people. WHO notes that regulation in many countries is limited or absent, raising concerns about youth nicotine addiction and related health risks. Nicotine pouches are small sachets placed between the gum and lip that release nicotine through the lining of the mouth. They typically contain nicotine, flavourings, sweeteners and other additives. Retail sales of nicotine pouches reached over 23 billion units in 2024, increasing by more than 50% from previous year. “The use of nicotine pouches is spreading rapidly, while regulation struggles to keep pace,” said Dr Vinayak Prasad, Unit Head of the Tobacco Free Initiative for WHO. “Governments must act now with strong, evidence-based safeguards.” WHO’s first global report on the topic entitled, Exposing marketing tactics and strategies driving the growth of nicotine pouches, was developed in response to requests from countries seeking authoritative guidance from WHO on nicotine pouches and how governments should respond. The global market of nicotine pouch products was worth nearly US$ 7 billion in 2025.

Mental Health Week (May 4–10) is often treated as a series of awareness posts, but at SAMHAA and SOUDA, we’re concerned about the infrastructure of care. The real work is in closing the gaps between community needs and the systems designed to meet them. We’re advocating for support that is as nuanced as the people using it. What’s one change you want to see in how mental health is supported in our community? Let’s talk about the practical shifts.

Wellness isn't just one thing—it’s the food that nourishes us, the walks that clear our minds, and the community that holds us up. When we invest in South Asian women’s wellness, we aren’t just helping individuals; we are healing entire lineages. Today’s Reminder: Your health is a priority. Your rest is productive. Your voice matters.

Healing isn’t just an individual journey; it’s a community effort. ❤️ When we talk about wellness, we have to address the layers that often go unseen. The volunteers of SOUDA (Students Overcoming Substance Use Disorder and Addictions) and SAMHAA (South Asian Mental Health Alliance) are at the forefront, breaking down barriers and building bridges toward a healthier future.
