This time of year always brings back so many emotions. We’re reminded of the immense bravery Addison showed when she came home from the hospital after a 10 hour surgery. This was no minor operation—her 9 pound tumor was removed along with 37 lymph nodes, a skin graft was taken from her thigh, and her back muscle was wrapped around to her chest - but not even that could dim her light. 24 hours later, she was up and determined to walk—her goal? To get back to playing basketball, get home to go back to school as soon as possible to see her friends, and that she did only 2 weeks later. Her courage and positivity shone through in ways that still leave us in awe. It’s no surprise that she earned a spot at the top of the Brave List for SickKids.💙🦋 Addy continues to inspire us every single day to put one foot in front of the other, even when it’s hard. Addy’s wish for answers has inspired a new era for individualized care at @sickkidsvs Precision Child Health will allow doctors to see how disease begins, what factors drive it, and where it is headed! So they can reverse its course and heal the future - one child at a time 🫶🥹 “On Addison's first day @sickkidstoronto , the day after she was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, she asked Dr. David Malkin if she was going to die. "That is a very brave question," he said, "but I do not have a crystal ball. I do know that we're all going to do everything we can." When Addy's cancer relapsed, she told Dr. Malkin, with a twinkle in her eye, that he should really get his hands on that crystal ball...he smiled. Addy's SickKids story began in August of 2021, on an ordinary summer day, when she mindlessly adjusted her bathing suit and was alarmed to find a painless lump in her right breast. Addy was referred to the oncology department at SickKids for chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Addy eventually purchased a crystal ball for Dr. Malkin as a gift, “now you need to learn how to use it," she said, and boy did he laugh. Addy passed away in July of 2022, two days after her 14th birthday, but her legacy lives on through @teamaddy8 , in the halls of SickKids, and on Dr. Malkin's desk-where the crystal ball still sits. We marked the arrival of #PrecisionChildHealth this week with a larger-than-life crystal ball on the lawn @sickkidstoronto , a symbol of a new era of individualized care. Today is International Day of Families 💛 A day we hold close to our hearts and remember the beautiful memories our family has shared over the years. Addy will forever be a part of our story. She is the heart and soul that holds our family together. She was the driving force of nature, and nothing could bring down her spark. I am reminded of the importance of holding space for both love and loss, as Addy will continue to live on within the laughter we share, the traditions we continue, and the stories we tell about her. Cancer will never be able to take any of that away. It stands as a reminder of how precious life really is, and the importance of cherishing the time spent with our loved ones. The bonds we create within our homes truly cannot be broken by grief or loss. Nurse’s Week…🩺💛 How can you put into words the expression of gratitude and support beyond measure that was offered to our family? Life has its ways of bringing people into our lives during the hardest moments. Addison’s cancer journey @sickkidstoronto was one of bravery and strength, but it was also filled with incredible kindness and love that wouldn’t have been possible without the team of caregivers there. In honour of Nurse's Week, I found it only fitting that I thank the amazing group of nurses who supported our family through it all. Over the next few days, I want to highlight those who truly left their mark on Addy, and our family! Bereaved Mother’s Day. I didn’t know this day existed… until I had to. This photo was from a Mother’s Day shoot with my girls when they were little. A moment in time I wish I could step back into, even just for a minute. Because the truth is…this isn’t just one day. It’s every day. Grief doesn’t follow rules or timelines. It shows up in the quiet, in the memories, in the photos, in aisle 7 at Zehrs. It lives alongside the love, the gratitude, the life that keeps moving forward. I’m so thankful for @alyssa___hill for her light, her strength, her presence in my life❤️ And I miss Addy in a way that never softens. There’s a space that will always be hers. A longing for what should have been, for more time, more moments like this one. Both can exist, and they do exist. Today I was holding space for myself, and for every mother carrying love and loss at the same time. Not just today, but every single day. If I could go back, I would in a heartbeat. For our 3x3 tournaments, we have an amazing team! Coach Andy, Marie, and I have been directing our 3x3 tournaments and handling the logistics alongside Mike, Courtney, Patrick, and Sabrina. Speaking of Mike, not only does he handle logistics, but he's also the man behind registration. Next, we have a powerful trio! Courtney, Patrick, and Sabrina! These three are the coordinators for volunteering. We also have Greg, who helps with coordination, marketing and branding the 3x3!
