âWhen I first started climbing 12 years ago, I thought what I loved most was the movement and the puzzle. But all these years in, what if I told you the best thing about climbing might not actually be climbing.â
On Mental Health Awareness Week, @_hannahmorris_ reflects on some of the ways climbing has supported her mental wellbeing over the years.
âClimbing has been instrumental in helping me build a more positive relationship with myself. Itâs given me a healthy perspective on challenge, taught me how to navigate uncertainty, helped me regulate stress, and reminded me that progress rarely looks linear. Climbing for me has been about improving as a climber: getting stronger and unlocking the next grades, but more often itâs been about building resilience and feeling part of a supportive community.â
The theme of this yearâs Mental Health Awareness Week is âActionâ. The Mental Health Foundation is asking people to take one small action for yourself or someone else.
âEven small actions can help us feel hopeful and less powerlessâ they state on their official website.
It could be as simple as getting some exercise this week, or making conversation with a newcomer at the gym. You could make someoneâs day.
Thatâs why we love Hannahâs sentiment that the best part of climbing is actually the community that she has become a part of.
What do you think is the best thing about climbing?

Is this the best warm up for bouldering?
The feet first travers is the perfect warm up for bouldering for a number of reasons:
- Itâs relatively low energy so you can ease into your session
- It takes place on the wall so youâre climbing from minute one
- It allows you to activate your hands without going too hard too soon
- It helps you to work on your footwork as youâll need to use both sides of your shoes
Warm up, get on the wall AND work on your footwork skills. Sounds like a damn good warm up to us.
Save this for your next session.

Stop dragging your feet. Literally.
Since your movement is driven by your legs, then the way you place your feet is one of the most important aspects of indoor climbing.
Join Megan and climbing coach Oz for 3 quick tips to dial in your footwork.
- Stay on your toes: using your tip toes allows for greater manoeuvrability on the wall.
- Practice silent feet: climbing without making a noise forces you to slow down and focus on your placement
- Find the long access: maximise your stability by identifying the longest part of the hold, giving you more surface to place your shoe on the wall.
