This garden of gloves, called “The Lost Glove is Happy,” was brought to life by Susan Schnur, 74, who created the exhibition in her front yard.
Schnur began to empathize with lost gloves she found during walks between her home and Coolidge Corner, feeling sad for the forgotten mittens until she remembered a quote by Russian-American novelist and poet Vladimir Nabokov: “The lost glove is happy.”
For two winters, she would collect the missing mittens as she built up and displayed her family of misfits — hoping to add to the enchantment of the neighborhood.
Schnur, who calls herself a festive person, wanted to add “whimsy” to her community.
Schnur has since taken down her collection of not-so-lonely gloves for the season, but said she hopes to bring them back out to be “found” by the community in future years to come.

The annual Hanging Nasturtiums display returned to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum on March 28, 2023. The brilliant orange flower vines cascaded from the third floor balconies into the courtyard and stayed there through April 16, 2023. The display is a year-long process, which includes potting and repotting the vines, growing the plants along the greenhouse walls at the Gardner’s South Shore Nursery, and transporting the vines back to the museum for the next year’s display.
