So, from Jan 15-28 I was on a 13-day, 7-city, 8-flight trip where I had multiple meetings and events to lead and host, as well as numerous presentations to deliver on both coasts. I had planned on posting a bunch of photos of all of the eventful things that took place on this deeply musical voyage.
And then, while I was in California for the middle four days of the trip, it turned into five days as I was witness to a miracle that occurred while I was there…son Chase and his wire Emily became parents for the first time with the birth of their precious twin girls early Friday morning. I was privileged to be able to greet the girls and hold them for 3 hours before I had to leave to finish the trip. So much for any puny grandpa Dean-ly music work trip photos…
On Saturday 7 February 2026, the USC School of Music is hosting dozen and dozens of its amazing student musicians in concert with food and drink throughout the Koger Center to honor Valentine's Day at the annual MUSICAL FEAST, presented by the Friends of the School of Music.
Enjoy this video shot by local TV personality and amazing music lover DAWNDY MERCER PLANK and her husband, Main Stage Sponsor for the event CRAIG PLANK State Farm, promoting the MUSICAL FEAST.
Today's the day. I REALLY look forward to this day every year because it comes at a time where I, and the rest of my family, have NO DISTRACTIONS from properly celebrating my wife Christine's Birthday, all day and all night.
She is everything.
Happy Birthday, babe...
December 15, 2025…today, on what would’ve been my dad’s 124th birthday I was privileged to hear a nice jazz ensemble arrangement of his favorite Christmas song, Silver Bells, performed by the Lake Norman Big Band here in Mooresville, NC. And who should happen to be the lead trombone in that band?
One JIM MCNABB, that’s who. He still plays like a dream and I was so lucky to hear him and this band cook on their holiday show.
Congrats to Jim and his band!!!
Ok, so most of thew music I listen to does not come from a streaming service. Having said that, here is my actual Spotify most-listened-to for 2025. I have gone ape for The Runarounds' songs (and my favorite one of theirs is curiously not even on here--Ghosts). There are also a couple by two of our students/former students in Music Industry Studies and its student-run record label, Greene Street Records here at Carolina, Hope Overlook and Katie DeMartini...
We are so overjoyed to offer usc students this amazing opp….

The end of Sing Thy High Praise, our centennial year of music at Carolina…our jazz faculty and then the Left Bank Big Band on consecutive nights at the Umbria Jazz Festival here in Perugia.
On my drive home just now tonight, this amazing song came on.
On the Turning Away.
I urge you to listen. It is incredible that it came on today--I consider it THE ANTHEM for 3 July 2025.
