We're very sad to have heard our friend, artist Leoma Lovegrove, is no longer with us. She brought undeniable and iconic hues to Southwest Florida. She made Matlacha a must-visit. She added some much-needed color to the world. And there will never be a Thanksgiving that I don't think of her -- or share this short film I made of her: /watch?v=dBuwWLv3hhk ***Back in 2012 I wrote this...*** There are few communities so singularly defined by colored paint as Matlacha in Southwest Florida. Driving through the community for the first time is like becoming Dorothy as she steps out of the black and white film and into the blazing technicolor of Oz, where almost anything is possible. Everything is slathered in vibrant tones and hues. It’s as if a Sherwin Williams factory exploded in the middle of an arts and fishing colony -- and no one ever cleaned up the splashes of paint. There are restaurants and bars, gift shops and seafood stores, ice cream parlors and mobile home parks -- but the pulse of Matlacha beats from the most colorful building of all...the LoveGrove Gallery and Gardens. ...and the person responsible for all of this colored paint is artist Leoma Lovegrove. So let’s talk Leoma for a minute… Creative. Eccentric. Patriotic. Quirky. Republican. (the polar opposite of me) Wild-eyed with signature “hand’ sunglasses reaching for the world with her vision -- Leoma absorbs the colors of Matlacha and throws them back at reality. She’s covered in the colors. On her clothes. On her skin. Reflected in the water. Painted on buildings. Filling the skies. Tinting the clouds. Rust and ashes. Neons. Pastels. Leoma absorbs them all, concentrates their essences and delivers them to the canvas, coconuts, rocks, palm trees and any other surface she comes into contact with. Flags. Hearts. Fish. Beatles. Snippets of songs. Pride for Matlacha. Leoma LoveGrove is a whirlwind of pigment. A force of natural art. A SWFL icon. And it’s tough to imagine what Matlacha would be like without her. #florida #fortmyers #swfl #sanibel #pineisland #pineislandfl #matlacha #TAUBERT #leomalovegrove

The Brewster Store looks picturesque in the late-winter light… The American flag is snapping in the wind like it’s trying to escape. I pause, pretending to admire the scene, but really just stalling. Having second thoughts. The frigid gale already gnaws at my ears... New work by Eric J. Taubert available at Barn Gallery | @barn_gallery : "barnacle billy’s. perkins cove, ogunquit." RECEPTION: Saturday, June 29th (from 4-7:30PM) “Gala Reception for Mid-Season Art Exhibitions at Barn Gallery”. Admission to the Reception is FREE + Open to the Public. “Barnacle Billy's Inc. & Barnacle Billy's etc is a meaningful place,” states Taubert. “It’s an iconic part of the identity of Ogunquit, Maine. The seasonal opening and closing dates represent something symbolic to the people who live in and visit the town. It’s a place that’s been serving up “Luxury Lobster” to smiling residents and tourists in Perkins Cove since 1961 – and this composition of mine delves into some of the complexity of what that actually means. There’s a story in here about the cyclical nature of the tourism industry, the visa workers, and the tip economy. Literal and figurative tides; of ocean water, of guests, of seasons, of storms. The ripples of time and memory; and the cherished legacy of William “Billy” Tower (1927-2013), the restaurant’s founder who was something of a larger than life figure in Ogunquit.” Ultimately, “barnacle billy’s, perkins cove, ogunquit.” stands as a powerful testament to the art of distillation. Taubert captures the essence of a vanishing breed: the quintessential “Old Coastal Maine” restaurant, where nostalgia intertwines with the salty tang of the sea, the clamor of summer evenings, and the endless tendrils of billowing steam swirling from countless platters piled high with lobsters and clams. This work compels viewers not just to look, but to truly see and acknowledge the myriad sophisticated complexities lingering just beneath the surface of a seaside tourist destination like Perkins Cove. #ogunquit #maine #ogunquitartcolony #TAUBERT #perkinscove

One of the artworks being shown in the “Storm Stories” exhibition at Alliance for the Arts in Fort Myers is “hurricane ian. sanibel island, florida.” by Southwest Florida artist, Eric J. Taubert. This piece of art depicts imagery from Taubert’s personal storm experience and his journey back to Sanibel Island (as well as Sanibel’s own journey towards a new normal) after Hurricane Ian. We decided to corner Taubert Gallery - The Art + Photography of Eric J. Taubert and get him to talk about some of the building blocks of imagery that he used to create his artwork, “hurricane ian. sanibel island, florida.” See the full interview at SanibelBarometer.com #Sanibel #SWFL #Florida #TAUBERT
