Motion capture is often associated with sport, film and video games. But a recent visit to the @universityofeastlondon by Catherine, Princess of Wales, shows what technology can do to help us grow healthier, happier children. As part of the launch for Foundations for Life, a landmark guide for professionals working with babies and young children, the princess visited the university’s Imaginarium: a 360-degree immersive sensory space where researchers study how different environments affect children's stress, attention and development. We're proud to say that Target3D designed and installed the technology that brings the space to life, alongside our partners at @bildstudios.social : a six-camera @optitrack Flex 13 motion capture system, six projectors across four walls and the floor, and two render nodes, integrated with @pixera.one . British Sign Language isn't a gestural version of English. It's a fully embodied language, where hand shape, body posture, spatial position and facial expression all contribute to delivering clear communication. At @theopenuniversity , researchers are exploring the use of full performance capture (including @manusmeta Quantum Metagloves) to develop machine BSL translation via 3D virtual humans in XR. Principal Investigator Prof Dr Fridolin Wild explains: “The long-term goal of AI machine translation for BSL with 3D virtual humans promises strong benefits for workforce inclusion because deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals can participate more easily in a more diverse job market. It can also help widen access or lower cost in lower stakes contexts.
