Some invitations arrive at exactly the right moment. I’m deeply grateful to Cescily Washington-Wiener M.Ed., Director of Community Engagement at the Herberger Theater Center, for inviting me to attend Disconnected Rhythms, presented by Tap 24.7: Phoenix Tap Dance Company. In a period marked by the transition of our family’s patriarch, her thoughtful gesture extended beyond me because my parents and my oldest son were able to join as well. That mattered more than words can express. Disconnected Rhythms is a powerful one-act tap production exploring the emotional cost of technology overuse and its impact on our relationships—following a married couple, a family at the dinner table, and coworkers navigating connection and disconnection. It ends with a beautiful reminder of what we all need most: genuine human connection. This experience reinforced something I believe deeply: community work is highly relational and sometimes outreach is beautifully unconventional. A single invitation can ripple across generations. Inspired by the show, my son is already planning to invite his friends to a lunch theater performance this summer; and my mom is signing up for beginner tap classes with Tap 24.7.
