(I am a bit late for this) but here is my final illustration for @taplingzines queer historical zine „We’ve always been here“ 🎭🕯️
this project was an absolute dream to work on and the final result of the entire book turned out so well!! I cannot wait to hold the physical editions of this in my own hands (and yes, i did pledge in the Kickstarter myself and got some copies to hopefully bring to future cons and spread even more queer joy🙂↕️) every artwork created for this is just so stunning!! 😭
✦ My own piece features Nyx, Aidan and Lilian in a victorian masquerade setting, wearing masks and defying gender norms. Nyx in particular is wearing a Gnaga mask – a mask shaped like a cats face that was traditionally worn by men dressed up in woman’s clothes in 16th century Venice (sometimes carrying a basket full of kittens).
✦ In that time specifically the city had been a beacon for queer culture due to a law that stated that a person wearing a mask could not be held accountable for their crimes. That way queer people could avoid arrest and the rise in male pr*stitution and homosexuality even made the government assign a „Ponte della Tette“, a bosom bridge, as well as changing laws to allow women to show their boobs off of balconies freely– all in the hopes of better competing with the rise of homosexuality
… I wonder how effective that had been xD
Tapling Zines are already working on their next project and I am so excited to see that come to life too🥹🫶 thank you so much again for this wonderful opportunity and I hope you enjoy the finished result 🩶

Thank you again for giving me the opportunity to represent Wales in this zine, which has now been my home for almost twenty years!
Image description: A digital, softly painted piece of two Welsh lesbians dressed in traditional attire relax together in a field of daffodils. One reads a book as she lays a limb difference on her adoring partner looking up at her, laid in her lap. The laid down woman strokes a Calico kitten's head. The two are hit with soft, warm sunlight.

This artwork features two Igorot men from different tribes, loving each other although it’s taboo. The mountain in the background is Sleeping Beauty Mountain in Kalinga, which has a legend that ends with the female protagonist losing her lover. She weeps until her death, forming the mountain’s silhouette.
Huge thanks to everyone who worked on and supported this project! ❤️

I can finally share my full illustration for @taplingzines "We've Always Been Here" queer historical zine!
This watercolor painting took me over 50 hours, but I really love the final result and all the small, meaningful (and historically accurate!) details. It takes place during the Islamic Golden Age, in Al-Andalus, specifically in the gardens, palace, and bath house of the Alhambra.
As a Muslim living in Spain, I really wanted to portray this period of our history! It was a notably accepting time for queer people, and something multiple historians attribute as the cause of Spain's current liberated attitudes around gay relationships.
This specific painting tells the (AU) story of two of my OCs: Oti and Ousmane. It occurs shortly after Ousmane was burned in a housefire, as his first trip to the baths. His best friend, now unable to deny the love he feels for Ousmane after he almost died, supports him and, ultimately, it brings the two of them together for their first kiss.
Ousmane is wearing traditional Tuareg attire too! The vibrant blues were something I absolutely wanted to paint~
Anyways, enjoy the gay romantic watercolor. 💋 The book is filled with so much queer joy and love, and late pledges are still open btw!
