Recently, I was awarded Adventurer of the Year award from the Australian Geographic Society (Wombat too).
I’m the 8th woman to win this award, joining an incredible legacy of female explorers:

This award is about more than personal recognition. It marks a shift in how we see adventure—not just as feats of endurance but as powerful storytelling. It’s about connection, resilience, and amplifying voices that are too often overlooked.
For me, this is a testament to the importance of illuminating stories of humanity, shining a light on marginalised communities, and redefining what adventure can be.
It’s exciting to see the world embracing more diverse, meaningful narratives. I hope this inspires others to explore not just new landscapes, but also new ways of seeing and connecting.
From an advocate’s perspective, this is a recognition of the unique way women adventure—our relevance in this space, and the courage it takes to step into uncharted territory.
Whatever path you’re on, I hope you have the courage to define it on your own terms.

Introducing Adventurer of the Year! Lucy Barnard is the most recent recipient (2024) awarded by Australian Geographic Society.
She is recognised for her ongoing expedition to become the first woman to walk the length of the Americas, a journey of over 30,000 km that started in 2017.

The end wasn’t easy. Bailey was legendary joining me in the cold, on road surfaces that are a killer on unseasoned feet!
