Last Monday night saw me closing out my run as fill-in host for @7thfloortheatre 's PLAYground cold reads at @piptheatreau while our regular host, Hayden, was away in Canada "being awesome" (if the scripts projected onto the wall which he made me read are to be believed). Each night was a privilege to convene as I tried to have some sort of handle, however loose, on the shenanigans that would unfold onstage as our merry band of brilliant actors came to grips with material they usually had no prior familiarity with, from Shakespearean comedy to apocalyptic drama. My biggest thanks to the regular team at 7th Floor - @izzygracefolland121 , @sallybaxtergraphicdesign and Gregg - for helping me come across generally more competent than I had any right to be! And while my time as host is up, this is not the end of my time at the PLAYground - you'll still have plenty of opportunities during the rest of the year as I throw myself into these luck-of-the-draw scripts; it'll just be Hayden and his self-proclaimed "awesomeness" tying the scenes together! 😊

"Don't you feel more LIBERATED now, my wild honey pie?" After two years since I began working on it, I am beyond thrilled to finally announce that the @soledadmirandaofficial -infused epic that is "All That Black" - my translation of @cristianaastori 's "Tutto Quel Nero" - will be published by Paul Cronin of @sticking_place_books , accompanied by a new cover crafted by the amazingly talented @suspirialand . It's now up for preorder on Amazon in both paperback and hardcover, and will be available from May 27! Translating this novel has been one of the most arduous projects I've ever been involved in - Kri's tale of lost films, hidden trauma and the relationships between artists and muses spoke to me on a deeper level with every revision of the text as I tried to bring the best out of her vision for a new audience, and I hope you will enjoy the book if you decide to give it a read (please do - you won't regret it!). At this point, I would like to thank all of the friends who've expressed an interest or enthusiasm for the book, but most especially Kri for her trust, Amy Brown and @cucufate1971 for their feedback, Paul for his putting up with my perfectionism, and most especially Tim Lucas for bringing Kri and I together in long-distance creative matrimony. In the meantime, an interview with Kri and myself, conducted by @stephenvaggmovies , can now be found on @filmink . Come for Kri's discussion on the process of writing the book and some insight into its to-be-translated sequels, stay for my explanation of how everything from Tim Lucas to #asterix to @charli.burrowes influenced my work on the translation!

So thrilled to have finally caught @allmyfriendsarebackinbrisbane for its SOLD OUT WORLD PREMIERE at @gcfilmfest in the company of a huge pocket of the lovely cast and crew! Considering the resources at our disposal - including a budget of $10,000 that blew out by 3000 because we all like coffee (or, in my case, hot chocolate) so much - it's a handsomely produced effort that benefits from @stephenvaggmovies 's typically sharp dialogue and @bloualston 's careful handling of the excellent cast, which is anchored by @nelleonline 's highly engaging and sympathetic lead performance as Cris. The score, composed by @prumontin , is also a wonderful surprise, and I'm happy to report that the end credits include some winks in the direction of @rogercorman and #videowatchdog's Tim Lucas. 😊 The movie's win for Best Queensland Feature Film is hopefully a good sign for the rest of its festival/theatrical run (including a series of Q&A screenings at @fivestarcinemas in New Farm at the end of the month) - if you're up for a cozy, minimalist, locally-sourced mix of light and dark, drama and romance, this movie will fit your bill nicely!

Congrats @freyacallaghanofficial and Mischa Heywood for carrying on the tradition of creepy horror kids in @richardthedirector 's @deadeyesmovie ! It's a well-produced genre offering with an interesting hook - the film is presented entirely through the POV of its protagonist (voiced by @chazcottier ), with very effective camerawork by @spacetimemovie alumna @julianpanettadp and a nice key performance by local rising star @anathunguyen . A great effort by all involved. (And it was lovely to meet you too, @billie_frampton_ !)

Nearly a year after debuting in a shorter form, @silly_derek_comics ' now-feature-length "Violet 2.0" had its Aussie premiere last night at @gcfilmfest ! The new footage (which includes a small cameo by me in one wide shot) is interwoven nicely into the existing fabric of the story and particularly gives further insight to the character of Georgia, which @eloise_molloy rises to the challenge of conveying. Kudos too to @annabellegracemmusic for contributing a lovely end credits theme, "Into Your Spotlight"! And a big hand to @allmyfriendsarebackinbrisbane 's @bloualston for hosting the Q&A with our director and stars - I can only imagine how Derek must've felt when you compared the film to Goddard and Peter Weir's early films! Thank you all for such a lovely night at the movies - I hope to work with you all on future projects! 💜

This weekend, I had the opportunity to finally watch Alex Cox's last movie, "Dead $oul$" - my part for which I had filmed at @minihollywoodoasys nearly a year and a half ago - by way of a screener he kindly forwarded to me. While not a perfect film - some of the editing, blocking and shot choices seemed quite ragged to my eyes - this is an offbeat, applaudably ambitious effort to combine and reconcile the politics of three seemingly disparate worlds: Nikolai Gogol's titular source novel, Sergio Leone's Westerns, and the USA's past and present relations with its neighbours south of the border. It particularly benefits from a spirited lead performance by Alex himself, playing hapless con-man Strindler as a kind of inverted Sartana. Alex also gets good material out of @zanderschloss as Borracho, @jesselee_sent_ya as John E. Behan, and @delzamora.actor (who goes strangely uncredited) as a mysterious but ill-fated triggerman who helps Strindler out of a pinch. But the biggest revelation is @sarahvistamusic as "The Widow" - Alex's decision to let her show off her natural talents as a Spaghetti Western-themed chanteuse might come off as a needless indulgence, but Sarah is a genuinely striking presence onscreen, and I think she definitely has a future as an actress should she choose to go down that path. All in all, this is a project I'm very happy to have been a part of (having some audible dialogue and receiving an additional special thanks credit definitely didn't hurt!) - it truly was an honour to stand on the hollowed grounds erected in Almería by Leone's master designer Carlo Simi, and it was a thrill to work with a cult favourite director alongside a brilliant cast and crew. I'm especially indebted to fellow cowboy extra Chris Boesen, who told me that I taught him more than I would ever know about taking the highs and lows of working on a busy film set in stride! "Dead $oul$" has been doing well on the festival circuit thus far and has recently been picked up by a well-regarded distributor with a history of releasing Spaghetti Westerns on Blu-ray, so I think this little movie that could does have the potential to reach an appreciative audience.

Saturday night saw @charli.burrowes debut the latest version of her regularly-evolving cabaret show "Millennial Romeo" at @leftys_musichall , exactly a year after its initial showing! Although many of the stories she shared will be familiar to you if you know her work well, their presentation here felt much more polished and urgent as Charli explores the need for love and connection through her art and travels - her climactic rendering of her contraction of scarlet fever during a recent residency in Melbourne is especially vividly told, and her latest short film is another fine display of her artsy cool. Thank you always Charli for always making February 14 a night to remember, to @jacqueline_furey for your AMAZING fire and sword-swallowing pre-show and handing out of roses, and @emmapruss_actor and @_madelineharper for being familiar faces to spend the night with! 🌹

Ever since 2015, when - as a bright-eyed Ippy Grammar boy - I saw @pacharomzembe and @gideonmzembe take to @laboitetheatre 's stage to tell the story of Isa and Moses Alaki in @futuredestin 's war-torn, continent-spanning epic "Prize Fighter", I KNEW that this play had the potential to make for a great movie. Heck, for my third year film project at QUT, I roped in @realconnorprice , @gwilkie99 and other talented fellow students to craft a short documentary about the story behind the play in order to help drum up some interest for such an adaptation. Now, it's finally coming to fruition. If you'd like to keep abreast of the production of this long-anticipated adventure, please give Pach, @pmco.io and @prize.fighter_film a follow, and/or sign up via PMCO's website for further insights and info!
