Poetry is the tray in which my mess lays, and then ceases to be messy. Quite contrary to these draft flying about. But, hey, it’s the start of a journey—be part of it…

“Art is and always will be controversial. Art was never neutral & I refuse to dilute it. Art is Art”
Piece: “Guilty”
Writer's note: What makes people open a conversation, what makes people seal it? I wonder. I hope “guilty” doesn't do the latter. Meet @marombedza_craig , our fellow drummers & I tomorrow on stage at the @blackculturalsocietypei 2026, 10th Anniversary & BHM Gala. We can't wait to share our art with you all.

“Art is, and always will be controversial. Art is nothing but political, and l refuse to dilute it.” In preparation of “A performance for the ages,” this is GUILTY, the concept. An adaptation of the show and the atmosphere to be felt. “Art was never neutral.”

We’re honoured to welcome our final performers to the Black Cultural Society of PEI Gala! ✨
Tanaka is a rising spoken word poet from Zimbabwe whose work blends poetry with other artistic forms to explore emotion, experience, and identity in powerful, distilled ways.
Joining him is Craig, a visual artist whose work is expressive, intuitive, and rooted in self-exploration. Through imagery, texture, and symbolism, his art invites reflection and challenges viewers to sit with emotion and meaning.
Together, they complete an evening shaped by voice, vision, and lived experience.
Don't Miss Out!!!
📝: “Harvests, (a thought)” 2025
Writer’s note: This is my short, introspective and piercing piece about the relationship between pain and purpose. It serves to share the profound sense of exhaustion and sacrifice. I hope those that resonate with it feel seen.

Poem: “Dance”🩰, 2025
Writer’s note: Sometimes I mumble as I write, letting flows of images and music guide me. Dance is a piece I performed recently, scribbling…or should I say “making my pen dance”...on a large sheet of paper to express the back-and-forth relationship between my pen, hand, and paper. Check out the video on the YouTube link in my bio.

Piece: Noise
What language spoken by a poet mocks yearning?
Truly,
what else am I good for…
but to yearn,
deeply.
Neither for love nor touch,
but for cars with engines that know rust…
cranky, uncared for.
They almost always sound like they are dying to crash,
because isn’t that a reminder
that I can, too, be used, though broken?
I yearn,
for drums to be punished, to be hit harder
all around—
adjusted and tightened,
burnt and pounded for nothing but sound,
till they find just the sweet spot,
sweet enough it makes a dancer’s heart stop.
Because maybe they’ll know too
how it is to sound great
when torn.
Nonetheless, I yearn
for kids to run the park and scream
louder —
from falling, fun, and joy,
excited to see another kid’s toy.
Because then maybe
that noise could finally choke me,
abuse me.
and remind me that it’s okay to shout
when the world preferred you silent.
To be alive.
To be a kid
To be loud.

On July 22nd 2025 I had an apple for lunch and mistakenly dropped it onto that rocky spot. For some reason I was intrigued more than I was infuriated; so I wrote a poem and took a picture of it all. Lunch lost but not for nothing, i guess😂🍎

I have had the most interesting conversations in art spaces and when I wrote this I was walking away from one.
In that space, I felt like we were what we consumed, art, & nothing less. So I wrote this to remind you of that whenever you walk into such a space again.

Thanks to my friend @_lumumba_mwikali for agreeing to be part of it too. I really love this piece (I am sure it shows)
