I was posed a question in theatre:
What kind of artist would you like to be?👀
And suddenly
a box began to form...
Not all at once.
First the corners, then the lines,
then a ceiling that lowered itself
just a little too quickly.
Medium? Meaning? Message?
They asked.
But I’ve always known the answer.
Not the academic one
not the white wall gallery or framed-in-theory one
but the one shaped like my grandmother’s hands.
The one that smells like hot oil rollers
and syrup from koeksisters,
sweet and sticky and unapologetically ours.
I want to be the kind of artist
who unearths...
into the things we weren't allowed to call art
The kitchen is a theatre.
The salon, a gallery.
The family braai, a living archive
of performance, resistance, survival with style...✨️
