We’re thrilled to announce a new addition to our collection: “Making Itself” by @TalLevitt , the original painting behind the mural in the Wilf Family Salon. This layered work captures vibrant elements of New York City, including Central Park as seen from the windows of our building, and includes objects and patterns drawn from the Jewish Museum’s collection. It is also a composite self-portrait of the artist and her daughter, who was born while this work was being produced. The painting and mural share the same base layer and composition — but they’re not identical twins. The painting was photographed before Levitt added molded paint elements and paint “stitches,” then it was printed at double scale on adhesive canvas to create the mural. The artist applied those dimensional elements separately to both works, so close looking will reveal numerous differences. 🎨: Talia Levitt, “Making Itself,” 2025. Acrylic paint on canvas. 55 x 130 in. #JewishMuseumCollection

I’ve been fascinated by Talia Levitt’s (@tallevitt ) work for years — the way her paintings layer color, craft, illusion, narrative, and the everyday into something both intimate and visually mesmerizing. Her technique is meticulous, her storytelling generous, and her ability to hold multiple worlds at once — tenderness, chaos, humor, memory — feels unmistakably her own. I had the joy of speaking with Talia for this interview and diving into her process: how she scores grids with a knife, pipes paint like embroidery, casts tiny objects in acrylic, and builds “visual diaries” that ask us, as she says, “What am I looking at, and how do I look at it?” What moved me most was hearing her speak so openly about motherhood and its impact on her work. “I can’t overstate how profoundly the merging of these worlds has changed the way I make and the way I see,” she told me. Her daughter, she said, has become her teacher — reshaping her relationships to imagery, narrative, and the act of looking itself. I’m humbled that she shared some of these very personal moments — painting with her newborn asleep on her shoulder, navigating the realities of caregiving, and finding new meaning in objects, symbols, and time. Talia’s ability to fuse still life with everyday life, and to turn the domestic into something monumental, continues to astonish me. Her new series 24/7 @vortic.art , created in the earliest days of motherhood, is a testament to that. Honored to share this conversation on @globalvoicesonline . Link in bio.

Step behind the scenes of Brooklyn-based artist Talia Levitt’s new site-specific mural, debuting this month on the Jewish Museum’s new fourth floor. Levitt’s layered, hand-embellished commission draws from multiple sources of historical inspiration, depicting a tiered shelf filled with objects inspired by the Jewish Museum collection—from a nineteenth-century Persian wedding dress to a colonial American coffeepot—set against a floral backdrop borrowed from a seventeenth-century Italian Torah binder. Select items depicted in the mural are displayed in vitrines in the Museum’s galleries, highlighting the resonance of Jewish culture across generations and art forms. Don’t miss @TalLevitt ’s mural when the Jewish Museum’s new galleries open to the public on October 24.
