đđžWhy money & why me? Allow me to re-introduce myselfâŚ
Maybe itâs because I run my own business, maybe itâs because Iâm nosy/curious đ but I love finding out about the people behind the business. Especially the people behind the small business, the micro-business, the one-woman-band business. Why do you do what you do? What did you do before? I have aaalll of the questions. I love a deep dive on a business about page. So why money and why me? Hereâs my origin story. đ

đ Budgeting has an image problem.
Budgeting is positioned with a focus on what you shouldnât do rather than what you can do.
So people think that to budget is to cut back, to restrict, that budgeting is a punishment for being âbadâ with money.
But itâs a false economy to cut back on all the things that make life worth living.
Because what happens then, similar to dieting, is that people eventually crack and splurge, then beat themselves up for being bad at budgeting and stop â and perhaps end up worse off than where they started.
So keep a line in your budget for something you enjoy. Whether itâs a product or service or activity.
For example, for some, maybe itâs the weekly meal out. Which, if thereâs not enough in the budget, becomes a weekly takeaway. And, if thereâs not enough money in the budget for that, becomes a weekly fakeaway â a homecooked version of your favourite takeaway dish.
Budgeting for joy is motivational budgeting. It's about coming up with options for how you can achieve the same or similar for less.
Because a budget that works for you is one you can stick with. đ

âTalia, whatâs the best budgeting app?â
Itâs a question Iâm asked A LOT.
My answer is often unexpected: âThere isnât one.â
Yes, there are a number of good budgeting apps to help you manage your money.
But the best budget is â drumroll please â the one you use.
Whether thatâs a budgeting app, a spreadsheet, online planner, pen and paper etcetera.
Whatever your budgeting tool of choice â the data out is only as good as the data in.
So before you budget, my question to you is: How much does it cost to be you?
The roof over your head, the food you eat, the bills you pay, the clothes you wear, the car you drive. You get the idea.
Because once you work out where your money actually goes â not just where you think it goes â you can use this info to produce an informed budget.
â
⨠How much does it cost to be you? is one of my âFour âNo sh*t Sherlockâ Money Habits to Futureproof your Financesâ covered in my new money masterclass video.

âDonât make me repeat myselfâ - signed, History.
I saw this poster taped on the side of a bookcase in a local bookshop a few months ago.
Itâs a reminder to CAST YOUR VOTE!
Today. Thursday. 7th May. National elections in Wales and Scotland, local elections in England.
Cast your vote, have your say.
Division and hate - not here for it.
As the poster in the image says: âDonât make me repeat myselfâ - signed, History.

âMy family, my in-laws and our friends are making so many plans for summer and itâs breaking me.
âEvery week thereâs a new WhatsApp group popping up to plan birthday dos and âminiâ breaks that are far from mini.
âNow a spontaneous summer holiday has been sprung on us by my husbandâs family.
âWeâve not been asked â itâs just been assumed weâre coming and for me, itâs like the straw that broke the camelâs back.
âWe canât afford it and I donât want to afford it either. Itâs not how I want to spend our money â or my time for that matter.
âI manage the family finances so I know just how much this is all costing us and Iâm trying to maintain our financial safety net.
âMy husband⌠well heâs happy to go along with everything and not think about the money but Iâm stressed.
âWe keep getting to the end of the month with nothing left â sometimes less than nothing â and itâs stressing me out.
âHow do I say no without being a killjoy? I donât want to seem boring or tight. But Iâm struggling. And how can me and my partner get on the same page? Iâm struggling to deal with it all â financially and emotionally.â
Yours, Justine, 44.
This is a real-life problem thatâs come to me from more than one client, particularly at this time of year. What would you do? How would you respond to this person?

đ When friction is your friend
Iâve had many coaching conversations with people beating themselves up for âoverspendingâ or âimpulsive spendingâ or âemotional spendingâ.
Our frictionless payments landscape, from 1-Click to Apple and Google Pay to Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) schemes, means itâs never been easier to be parted from your money.
Itâs a retailerâs dream but for many people itâs a nightmare.
If you struggle with overspending, I donât think the onus is on you to learn how to âbe more disciplinedâ or âhave more willpowerâ â as many of my money coaching clients have said to me.
Rather, the frictionless payments landscape, with its low barrier to spending, isnât serving you.
Itâs not you, itâs them.
Friction is your friend.
Remove the tools available at your fingertips which enable you to spend money you donât have, canât afford or simply donât want to spend. You can:
-Close the accounts
-Cut up the cards
-Remove your payment details from shopping websites
-Break up with BNPL
-Take the payment options off your phone and laptop
None of this makes you a failure. All this makes you is self-aware.

Knowing isnât doing.
Being âgoodâ with money isnât only about learning the practical stuff.
After all, weâre not short of information on how to manage money.
Thanks to the internet and smartphones, weâve never had so much information readily available.
Most of my money coaching clients have consumed books, blogs, podcasts, YouTube videos about money and found it easy to take in the info⌠but harder to take action.
Thatâs why Talia Loderick Coaching exists.
Because the clarity and control and confidence that comes from taking action â and having someone hold you accountable for taking action - is JOYOUS. â¨
