Rip-Off: The Misconceptions of Sustainability, Pt. III: Gluttony
This photoshoot concept is an inspired sophisticated look that alludes to the upper class and the ways food is often wasted.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30 to 40 percent of the U.S. food supply is never eaten, making food waste the most common material found in landfills and incinerators.
As someone who experienced food insecurity growing up, I think about how much of a difference sustainable food systems couldâve made for my family and others like mine. If more food had been shared instead of wasted maybe we wouldnât have had to struggle as much for our meals.
It could make a difference for many families if food were redistributed or donated rather than discarded. Countless food is lost throughout the supply chain due to many factors like over-production and quality standards that emphasize appearance over functionality(Lai, 2021) Rather than going straight to the landfill or incernator, consider small actions like donating, composting, buying only what youâll eat, and learning more about expiration date myths.
