Places That Once Were - part 4
-General Motors Components Plant
Location: St. Catherines, Ontario
Opened: 1901
Ceased Operations: 2010
Current Status: Land condemned
Interesting facts:
The factory was first used to make horse buggies and carriages.
In 1929 GM purchased the plant and started production of parts for automobiles.
From the 70s-90s the plant suffered severe job loss and layoffs due to several factors, one of the main ones being GM losing business to overseas competitors.
In 1992 two maintenance workers were killed in a crazy accident.
The plant shutdown in 2010, the land was purchased by a plastic company that planned to build a factory there but the plan was abandoned.
The land currently sits in a state where it cannot be developed due to chemical contamination from the factory.
I guess this truly defines a wasteland.

Interesting Facts:
-During WWI the prison was used as a hospital for disabled veterans.
-The prison was totally self sufficient with a farm, clothing factory, rock quarry, and many other industrious facilities.
This would give the inmates practical skills that could help them integrate into society.
