When I first arrived in Switzerland, the biggest challenge turned out to be simple social interactions – how to greet people. Before, I always understood hidden cultural rituals: when men should shake hands, when to extend the same courtesy to women, and in which situations it’s better to refrain.
But in Switzerland, a European country with four official languages, I found myself lost. When everyone on hikes would say “Grüezi”, I initially didn’t even understand what it meant.
So I started a research: what conditions influence how we greet each other. There turned out to be about 20: mood, weather, social status, relationships between people, health, surroundings, event formality… From all this, I created a flowchart – a scheme helping to understand when to simply wave, when to smile and nod, and when to hug and shout “Yooooou!”
This flowchart became part of the annual exhibition at @zhdk_transdisciplinary under the theme of translocality. Huge thanks to @mazayatz , who transformed my incomprehensible scheme into an amazing visual project. All credits for beauty go to her, an incredible designer, illustrator, and artist.
A year later, this wall was still stored in our university atelier, but it was time to say goodbye. I decided to send it to the train station — the place where people most often meet and say “hello” to each other. In a future it would be avaliible as a poster and I continue making new flowcharts.

What an evening at @villastraeuli ! Thank you, everyone who joined us for our presentation with @nanystya
We shared three ongoing projects:
“Radical Transparency” - our artistic partnership agreement printed on transparent paper, making the usually hidden negotiations of collaboration visible and tangible: money, authorship, responsibilities and how to keep transparency with care.
“Artistic Pairs: Methodology of Collaborative Creation” - a research where we explored how iconic artist couples like Gilbert & George and Christo & Jeanne-Claude collaborated by adopting their methodologies. We want to reflect on how we should work with @nanystya through a process of making reenactments.
And at the end I read text for my future performance “My Father Only Sings Sad Songs” - about how three generations in my family communicate emotions through music rather than words. And how I hate to talk on the phone with them.
