What is Tabor Dance? Origin story time!
In the Spring of 2020, during the COVID pandemic and quarantine, a group of friends met on Mt. Tabor on a Wednesday at sunset to dance. They brought a speaker and a playlist, and drew chalk circles to dance in so they could stay safely apart but still be together. Every Wednesday at sunset they gathered on the mountain to dance.
Soon people joined them…then more people…and more…
It was easy to see the dance was needed in the community. People began to count on the dance for their weekly social time, movement, and creative outlets.
DJs and artists began to show up and share their talents.
A small group of volunteers stepped up to lead the group. We started social media accounts and began leading what we now know as Tabor Dance. We decided that the dance was important for the community, and we need to keep it going. We vowed to make sure it stays free and open to all.
So the dance grew…and grew…What started as a group of friends and an idea became an entire community. More talented volunteers joined the team.
In 2022 the team got a small grant and bought their own equipment after 2 years of borrowing bits and pieces from a variety of generous friends.
As the dance grew, in 2023 the team realized to keep the dance sustainable and our community safe we needed to become a nonprofit and add more infrastructure. We are now working with Portland Parks & Recreation to get permits and provide this needed infrastructure for our events.
Through a pandemic, location changes, no budget, all types of weather, and a whole host of issues over the years the team has stuck tight together and kept the dance going strong. Through it all we have continued to host free, regular, inclusive dance events year ‘round.
Tabor Dance takes place on Wednesday evenings most weeks of the year, on Mt. Tabor as well as other parks and local venues.
Mt. Tabor Dance community believes that dance is for EVERY body. All are welcome.
See you on the dance floor, loves.

🌿 Community recognizes community. 💫
At our Flower Power dance on 4/29, we had the chance to connect with the amazing folks from Friends of Mt. Tabor Park — a fellow volunteer-run organization dedicated to keeping the park healthy, welcoming, and thriving for everyone who visits. 🌲
In this interview, we talked to board member Sebastian Busby about the growing connection between our communities, what Friends of Mt. Tabor Park does, and what it means to create joyful public spaces together. 💚
Hearing that we’re doing a good job cleaning up after ourselves was so nice to hear! We’re proud that Tabor Dance is becoming known not just for the dance — but for showing love and respect to the land that hosts us. ✨
Let’s keep earning that reputation together!
Pack it in, pack it out, help your neighbors, and leave the mountain better than we found it. 🌲
Big love to Friends of Mt. Tabor Park for everything they do for this special place. 💫

Cup full. There’s a moment at each dance when we sit back and marvel at this community and what we’ve built together. For me this was the moment tonight…DJ slaying, crowd cheering and dancing together, and the beautiful park holding us all together in this special moment.
Thank you for dancing, for donating, for sharing your art, for picking up trash, finding lost items, and all of the PLUR! We love you!
See you soon, dancers and dreamers. 🙌🏽🪩💕
Big Love,
Party Captain
