Fulfgor trudges through the ash-laced brambles of the Delving Grounds. The egg had been sld, the coin spent, and yet no noble title awaited him; only silence from the high halls and a return to the outskirts. His paws, once calloused with hope, now tremble with disilusionment. The Delving Day, he had learned, was no test of merit, but a spectacle. A spectacle that kept his kin toiling in the dirt while the lords drank wine and watched.
He sits beneath a crooked tree, its bark blackened by old fire. The wind carries whispers of something older. Something watching.
A glint catches his eye. Its a spider, obsidian and large, that descends from a thread spun of shadow. It speaks not in words, but in truths that coil around his heart. âThey will never let you riseâ it seems to say. âBut I will.â Fulfgor does not flinch. He listens.
He offers the last of his coin to the spider, and it drinks it like dew. Pain follows now and his his veins burn, his fur darkens, and his crook twists into a staff of chitin and silk. The spider nestles itself upon the staff. His eyes, once soft with dreams, now gleam with purpose. He rises, no longer a delver, but a dark priest of Lolth. The spider goddess has marked him, and through her, he will unravel the web of lies spun by the nobles.
The foothills behind him fade into memory. Ahead lies the city, and with it, reckoning.
