On our 4 year Sync Seattle anniversary today, we want to share a story of love, connection, and friendship…told by @shadai.renee 🙌🏾 Lauren and I first met in 2017, and our journey together has been shaped by love, community, and beautiful, unexpected connections. As we celebrate our marriage on February 28, 2026, in Costa Rica, we can’t help but look back at the incredible village that supported and celebrated with us along the way…a village that started right here with the Sync Seattle community. In 2023, Lauren and I were living in Seattle and actively searching for Black events around the city via Instagram. That search led us to the Sync Seattle “Vibe After 5” event. We decided to take a chance and check it out, and little did we know, that evening would change the course of our lives. Within just 20 minutes of arriving, we were welcomed into an amazing and vibrant environment. It was there that we met the people who have become our closest friends and, truly, our family: Monika and Keshona. The connection was instantaneous. In a wonderful twist of fate, we discovered that Monika and Lauren are from the exact same town in Georgia. After our time living in Seattle, we moved back to Atlanta. Despite the distance, our bond with Monika and Keshona remained as strong as ever. They traveled to Atlanta to visit us, and our friendship continued to blossom. We’ve moved back to Seattle three times in the past four years, and Tanise and Derrick have always stayed connected. Keshona served as our officiant. Monika stood by us as one of our bridesmaids. Sync Seattle is so much more than just an event hub, it is a space that builds lifelong friendships and creates extended family. We are so grateful to Tanise, Derrick, and the entire Sync community for fostering the spaces where we first met our chosen family. some things you can’t plan. like she’d be gone two months after the launch of Sync Seattle. like the fact that the woman who taught me everything about showing up for people, showed up for me and my husband, supporting us as founders at our very first Sync Seattle event. 🧡 today i’m thinking about legacy as this is my 4th mother’s day with her no longer here. what it means to build something and know exactly where it came from. my mom gave me that. her faith, her warmth, the way she made every single person feel like they mattered. And we’ve built that through Sync Seattle. this first photo is from our wedding day. two mothers, mines and Derrick’s. Reading the bible that belonged to my grandmother. reading over us as we became husband and wife AND tying everything we were meant to build together. to my mother in love, Cynthia…thank you for raising the man who does this thing called life with me. thank you for being more than an in-law, you are family and have truly helped to nurture me since my mom left us 🧡 to my mom. everything i do is because of you 🥹 happy mother’s day to every mother, bonus mother, mother in spirit, and to those holding grief today.
