Santa Ynez Chumash Environmental Office now has wildlife cameras! Zanja de Cota creek, a tributary of the Santa Ynez River, is a wildlife corridor that runs through the Santa Ynez Chumash reservation. Due to its plentiful vegetative cover and flowing surface water, it is an attractive pathway for many of our local fauna to traverse safely through without encountering humans. Here we see a well known local animal, the common raccoon (Procyon lotor) as he makes his journey across the creek late at night. Keep your eyes open for more wildlife photos from SYCEO!

Come join us for our May 7th Nursery Volunteer Day! This month we are focusing on vermicomposting, otherwise known as making fertilizer with worms! We’ve been collecting food scraps from participating households on the reservation and feeding them to our worms, which have helpfully broken down all that nutrients into a form our nursery plants can utilize.
