Sound and scent have always felt like sisters to me — unseen, yet able to move us in the deepest ways. A perfume is composed much like music. The base notes are the rhythm… the grounding pulse, the quiet structure beneath it all. The heart carries the emotion — full, expressive, alive. And the top notes are those first sparkling moments that draw you in, like the opening bars of a beloved song. Natural perfume especially is meant to move — unfolding slowly across the skin over hours, never flat, never hurried… more like a living symphony than a static composition. At this year’s solstice gathering in the Atelier, that harmony became beautifully tangible as sound and fragrance drifted together through the space. Happy to announce our first concert event of 2026. On April 2nd we'll be welcoming The Madeleine Elkins Trio from Vancouver. Made up of guitarist/composer Madeleine Elkins, bassist Will Chernoff and drummer Kevin Romain, the trio performs Elkins' compositions which draw influences from jazz, rock, folk and experimental music. They recently released a record on the Infidels Jazz label. Also performing is the Orange Light's de facto house band, Allotropes, who perform a mix of reedist and composer Shane Krause's compositions and free jazz classics. Norm Adams & Joe Sorbara ...on the West Coast! With support from the Canada Council for the Arts, we will share a set with Chris Banks at the Tranzac in Toronto on June 2nd before traveling west to play with François Houle at Studio 2H (Saanichton), Allotropes at the Orange Light (Victoria), Meredith Bates and Chris Gestrin at the Cranberry Valley Artist Retreat (Salt Spring Island). We will then offer a workshop at 8East (Vancouver) followed by a show with Peggy Lee, Lisa Cay Miller, and Clyde Reed. #comehear #creativemusic #everythingonthetable

June will be a busy month at the Orange Light. We're bookending the month with two exciting shows. The first will be the duo of cellist Norm Adams and percussionist Joe Sorbara performing a set of improvised music for tabletop instruments. Norm Adams is a Halifax-based cellist, whose practice has evolved from training in the classical tradition into performance in improvised, experimental, and electronic music, as well as composed concert music. Opening the evening will be local freebop trio Allotropes who had to cancel their last Orange Light performance. Allotropes is the trio of saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Shane Krause, bassist Trav Short and drummer Miles Fuller. They perform largely original music with a sprinkling of free jazz classics. Full line-up for the Oct. 31st event announced. As well as the Jessica Ackerley Trio with AF Jones, the improvising trio of Viviane Houle on voice and synth, Shane Krause on bass clarinet and saxophones; and Trav Short on double bass will be opening the festivities. Ticket link in bio.
