Iowa's First Congressional District was one of the closest races in the country in 2024—and a broader voter contact program could have changed the outcome.

📋 Ground Truth canvassing with volunteer Kate 📋
Kate is based in New York, New York. Kate got involved because she sees winning back the House as essential to making progress. “When I think about the changes I want for our country, they are only possible if Democrats retake the House. Although I don't agree with every party position, I believe a Democratic majority is essential for improving the lives of everyday people.”
Ground Truth stood out to Kate because of how different the conversations felt. “Knocking on every door. I think I was able to have a lot more unfiltered conversations in comparison to the conversations that I've had working on GOTV canvassing for a specific candidate.”
“I really liked being able to hear what people had to say, whether positive or negative, and felt like it seemed a lot less artificial than other conversations I've had where I've come in with an explicit mission.”
While canvassing, one interaction stayed with Kate. “A conversation that really stuck out to me was one I had with a man with a really large and enthusiastic dog. Coming out on his porch he told me a lot about how utility prices have increased due to the actions of an energy company that had a monopoly on the area.”
“He spoke a lot about how he felt a lot of these struggles with cost of living and the concentrated power in our government were interconnected, and that really resonated with me.”
Those conversations shaped how Kate thinks about leadership right now. “Young voters want political leaders who mean what they say and take action. I think gone are the days where young people are satisfied with a strongly worded email.”
“When I talk to my friends, I think a common consensus is that we want leaders who stand up for our rights and want to build an economy that works for everyone, not just the powerful.”
After canvassing, Kate left feeling energized. “I think it's really empowering to do voter contact work. I love getting to hear from people and their candid opinions, and felt like I was able to talk to a really diverse set of people from different backgrounds who all live in the same community.”
Keep calm and carry on.
The Virginia Supreme Court was wrong to overrule the redistricting initiative because Virginians made their voices heard through a fair referendum. The GOP and complicit courts have chosen to override their will.
But despite this, we CAN still win the House. While this is undoubtedly a setback, it doesn’t fundamentally change our ability to flip the House in November. However, it does shift our tactical focus in Virginia, and it means we’ll need to fight even harder there this year.
The organizing and voter contact work that was done around the referendum was not wasted—far from it.
In fact, it created important infrastructure and momentum heading into November. And we can build directly on the organizing, volunteer recruitment, and voter engagement work already underway to channel frustration with this decision into electoral victories across the country this fall.
