One in 10 children do not own a book of their own. World Book Day aims to change this by encouraging children to read for pleasure and receive a book of their own for free.
To support this locally, Central Library is one of Swindon’s World Book Day exchange hubs. Anyone with a World Book Day 2026 book token can go to Central Library and use their token to choose one of the specially-selected free books, up until the 15 March.
Tokens are distributed through schools and nurseries and a range of children’s magazines. Central Library also has World Book Day tokens available for children who do not have one.
Children who dress up for World Book Day are invited to wear their costumes to Central Library to collect their book. They will also receive a free sticker and bookmark along with their free book (while stocks last).
Visit the Courtyard Gallery on the ground floor of Central Library to view 'What Fostering Means To Me', an emotive exhibition of artwork by people who have lived experience of foster care. Running until 27 March.
If you have ever considered fostering, please get in touch with the fostering team at Swindon Borough Council. There are many different types of fostering available, from overnight days and respite care to long-term placements.
To find out more about fostering in Swindon, please contact the Fostering Recruitment Team: Call: 01793 465700 or email: [email protected]
Saturday 28 February, 11am - 1pm, Central Library.
Join us for the launch of author John Cullimore's latest novel: Finding Father. Taking the form of a historical mystery and emotional quest, and inspired by John's own father’s long sea voyages to South America and his unfulfilled dream of settling there, it became John's way of giving shape and meaning to those untold years.
Signed copies will be available on the day for £10.
Synopsis:
Brazil, 1976. John Dyson, a young British medical student, arrives in Rio de Janeiro for what should be a routine study placement. But he carries a private mission: to uncover the truth about his late father.
Twelve years earlier, his father vanished into Brazil at the height of Cold War turmoil. When he returned, he was a broken man—haunted by secrets he never revealed. Now, retracing his footsteps, John is drawn into a hidden world of love and betrayal, intrigue and fear, where nothing is as it seems.
As past and present collide, John must decide how much he is willing to risk for the answers—and whether the truth can finally bring healing.
