At the start of last year, I discovered an artist called Ova Looven (Chris Donohue). He released music in New York in the early 2000s. His music completely captivated me. There was something so powerful and emotional about it.
At the time, Iād been feeling pretty stuck creatively. But hearing Chrisās music cut through all of that. Not long after, I began building a track of my own. Part of Chrisās vocals naturally found its way into it.
I tried to reach out and connect with Chris. I hoped to learn more about his story and ask if he was open to hear a song I made, or if we try creating something new together. But when I tried to reach him, I sadly learned that he had passed away in June 2024.
I was able to track down his friend Glenn in New York. Theyād been in a band called Antarctica together in the 90s. Glenn was so incredibly kind and supportive when I showed him the track. He helped connect me with Chrisās wife, Tara.
From the very first message, Tara was so open and welcoming. We spoke about Chris and how he approached life and music, and how music is this incredible thread that connects people across space and time.
Iām incredibly grateful to Tara and Chrisās brother Mike for giving me approval to use Chrisās vocal in the track.
Chris made so many incredible songs over his career. His music touched and inspired many different people. Thatās the most you can ever hope to do.
