Over two days, our artists in residence, Hayley (@floxnz ) and Pierre (@sweats___ ), worked alongside students from SMP Swasta Tanjung Karoso in Kodi on a collaborative mural and creative workshop. Inspired by Sumba’s rich cultural symbols, they made the school’s wooden wall look more vibrant and full of meaning. “The result became something far more meaningful than paint on a wall — an expression of joy, confidence, collaboration and pride. To be able to offer even a small spark of inspiration felt deeply humbling,” says Hayley. 🎨 😍 #artistresidency #capkaroso #sumbaisland

Discover the bold contemporary work of Sweats at the Taranaki Art Show. Bold. Raw. Impulsive. Sweats’ work pulls from street culture, portraiture and contemporary art to create pieces that hit with intensity. Electric colour, layered marks and sharp graphic energy collide to form portraits that feel alive — confronting, curious and impossible to ignore. Seen in situ, the work shifts the energy of the room. The kind of piece that stops people in their tracks and sparks conversation the moment they walk in. This is the energy we love bringing into the Taranaki Art Show. With over 40 artists from across Aotearoa, the boutique show brings together everything from traditional landscapes to bold contemporary works like this — making it the perfect place to explore, discover what resonates, and maybe take home something that truly moves you. Explore. Imagine. Take it home. 🎨 𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗽 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼 We are excited to introduce this incredible lineup of artists for their upcoming residencies at Cap Karoso! 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐛 | 21.02 - 08.03 A photographer, filmmaker, and podcast host, Matt’s work focuses on exploring the relationship between land, people, and cultural memory. At Cap Karoso, @mattyj_ay will immerse himself in the cultural heart of Kodi, working through photography, filmmaking, and podcasting to gently document and honour the rhythms, knowledge, and living heritage of the Sumbanese community. 𝐉𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐮𝐥 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞 | 24.03 - 10.04 Following the meaningful personal and creative exchange he experienced last year with us, @jake_paul_white is coming back for his second residency at Cap Karoso. This time, he will focus on community engagement by creating murals with local school children in Kodi and introducing them to the foundations of painting, while continuing to experiment with Sumba’s natural dyeing techniques and locally sourced pigments. 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐗 & 𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐒 | 30.04 - 22.05 FLOX (Hayley King) and SWEATS (Pierre Hadlow) come together through a shared approach rooted in place, process, and exchange. In Sumba, they will learn from ikat weaving and carving traditions while sharing stencil, drawing, and compositional techniques through open, community-focused collaboration, blending @floxnz layered stencil practice with @sweats___ bold, instinct-driven exploration of colour, rhythm, and human form. #artistresidency #culturalexploration #capkaroso #sumbaisland

Exciting new artist to the gallery: SWEATS. Featured work ‘Night Light’ by New Zealand artist SWEATS has been created with enamel spray paint, acrylic paint, hand-cut stencils, using a wide variety of paint applicators, on a New Zealand made ply box board. Signed by the artist. Size: 1000mm (w) x 1000mm (h) About the artist: Bold and primal, SWEATS creates expressive work that’s rooted in feeling over formula. His pieces begin in abstraction colour, rhythm, and motion before faces, figures, and features like eyes, lips, and teeth emerge. The process is instinctive, driven by emotion and energy, aiming to strike the senses first and let meaning follow. At times, the effect edges into synaesthesia where colour feels like sound and texture carries mood inviting viewers to connect with the layered, unfiltered experience of being human in their own way. View this work in the gallery: 3 Boundary Road, Hobsonville Point, Auckland or shop online 24/7 at www.limngallery.co.nz
