After about an entire year of off an on attempts to rid the shell of its mangled, bondo-laden history, the BH930 was ready for finer bodywork and paint.
Simo’s eye for imperfections makes me nervous - it’s keen in a way only decades of undivided attention and meticulous care can provide. Pits, divots, and blemishes that would have gone uncorrected if it had been in anyone’s hands less concerned with perfection.
Our friends at Santana’s Auto Body handled the prep and paint - you might remember Mike from the #CSF911, where he helped us create a custom silver so wet, the sight of it quenches thirst. The direction for this car’s paint scheme changed at least 6 times over phone calls, facetimes, and midnight texts, but it was eventually decided that white was the owner’s preference.
At this point in the BH930’s journey, the final result was finally within imagination’s reach.
This series has been some years in the making, so we’re going to start from the top.
In 2022, the mechanical wizards at @svauto embarked on an undertaking even they didn’t know the extent of at the time. The car’s owner, who we’ll call BH, sourced a fairly rough 930 Turbo for the sole purpose of tearing down to use as a canvas for Simo and his team to create a one-of-one rebuild. Essentially, they were building, from the frame-up, a brand new 930 Turbo.
Onto the “however” you’ve been waiting for. We didn’t know how “rough” of a car this was until it was shipped to Southern California. On its first drive to film the start of this project, it sputtered, smoked, and died in Simo’s driveway. Once torn down, this car only got uglier. A bent and twisted frame hidden underneath an ungodly amount of bondo. A non-turbo fender modified to replace its factory counterpart. Corrosion covered by 6 cars’ worth of resprays. If damage and repair tell a car’s story, this one’s a true crime documentary.
I believe Simo when he said “this is the worst car I’ve ever had to work on” - he’s normally one to level out the peaks and valleys of his work into a modest middle ground. The hard work had just begun, and was already significantly harder.
