ESPAÑOL ABAJO We have heard reports that Federal Border Patrol and ICE agents are arriving in Oakland and are planning raids across the Bay Area at Home Depots and in places where immigrant communities are known to gather within a 40 miles radius of San francisco. We want to spread the word and help people be as safe as possible. We also want to share any tools and information we can to help people protect themselves and their loved ones in case they encounter ICE agents or have someone taken by ICE. Here is a tool/graphic of what to do during an ICE raid and what to do within the first 24 hours of your loved one being taken by ICE.

There’s a new opportunity for thousands of people to be free! Last week the California Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to jail someone pretrial solely because they couldn’t afford bail. If you have a loved one held pretrial reach out to them and their attorney about the Kowalczyk ruling - they may have a new opportunity to come home!

📢 Last week, the California Supreme Court issued one of the most important decisions on pretrial issues in U.S. history! The Court ruled that it was unconstitutional to jail someone solely because they couldn’t afford bail and banned pretrial detention of people in less serious cases. This means that hundreds of thousands of people every year charged in low-level and non-violent cases will now be released. The Court’s decision is not only an important win for pretrial freedom and ending the criminalization of poverty, but a win for public safety as well. Read more about In re: Kowalczyk in the links in CRC’s bio.

Today was a very emotional day supporting the Yang family as they shared their announcement of a civil lawsuit against LAPD. Families gathered in a circle in prayer, listened to a song Yong recorded, and heard a pastor speak words that Yong himself once said. It was incredibly moving and showed how self-aware he was, how much he was actively working on himself and reflecting on his life. It’s devastating to think that one mental health crisis took everything from him and his family in just 6 seconds after police arrived. Six seconds to take a life and forever change a family. Moments like this make it so clear how imperative it is that we have accessible, non-police mental health crisis support available to everyone. When someone is in crisis, they deserve care, understanding, and trained professionals who can de-escalate and support, not a response that can turn fatal in seconds. #justiceforyongyang #protectyourpeople

In March 2022, Chris Echols was pumping gas at a Chevron station when he was profiled, stopped, and arrested by undercover Menlo Park police and tagged as a Taliban gang member. Through his attorney Roscoe Elliot, Chris filed a discovery request under the Racial Justice Act (RJA) to challenge the entire gang database, Menlo Park police procedures and policies, that even put him in the database to begin with. The whole time he's been in the database, there's been no charges filed on him that even associated him with any gang enhancements, and in fact when they got the discovery, the Menlo Park police then took Mr. Echols OFF the database. The RJA challenges the make-up of this database, policies and procedures. At the hearing last month, we filled Chris' side of the courtroom where the judge ordered the DA and Menlo Park police to turn over the 125 names of everyone on that database -- over 90% of whom are Black. Today, the DA moved to dismiss the case, but Chris said no. Through his attorney, he said this was much bigger than him, that the community support who came to the last hearing should show the courts how important this is. Those of us who live in Menlo and EPA know the kind of shade and shadow that police cast on our people, and the RJA has been a way to expose these injustices. Everyone in that courtroom was shook!! The judge said she needed time to research what the rights of a defendant are to object to their own case dismissal. We come back May 27th!! #protectyourpeople #vivachris

Our response to the Mayor's budget that prioritizes policing as a strategy to criminalize, unhouse, and gentrify our communities while lining the pockets of housing and tech developers to create a San Jose that belongs to the wealthy. We urge the city council to create a budget that reflects that all our children can build their families here -- not just those who have the dollars to buy it. Justice For Joseph Perez! Dozens packed a Los Angeles County Courthouse to demand Justice for Joseph The judge ruled that Joseph Perez’s civil case against LA County will go on to trial in 2027, a big win for @vanes.saperez23 and supporters. Joseph Perez was brutally beaten by Los Angeles Sheriffs Deputies out of the City of Industry Station, some of those deputies are confirmed deputy gang members.

Last week, we joined Assemblymember @ash_kalra Kalra and Co-sponsors of AB 1958 to give testimony at the Assembly Public Justice Committee on amendments to the Racial Justice Act (RJA). The RJA prohibits bias or discrimination in charging, conviction, and sentencing based on a defendant’s race, ethnicity, or national origin. However, its implementation has been slow-going. Many District Attorneys are refusing to hand over the data necessary to file statistical claims. Judges are interpreting the RJA according to their own understanding of race, the law, and what they think the proper remedy is. This amendment to the law under AB 1958 would clarify and make the RJA consistent throughout the state.
