MoMA Permanent Collection On exhibit until 2027 - Floor 4, 414 In the late 1960s and early 1970s, artists responded to a world increasingly shaped by mass media and consumer culture. They repurposed tools of commerce and communication to explore alternative models of distribution free from corporate control. As video became available outside the television industry, it made possible new forms of art making, activism, critique, and connection. The technology of this period exposed the feedback loop between spectatorship and surveillance period. As a landmark video installation, Wipe Cycle (1969) disrupts the traditional flow of visual information by incorporating a live feed of the viewer. Analytical Beauty April 24 to October 4, 2026 Neue Galerie, Graz, Austria The concept of Analytical Beauty, primarily defined by William Hogarth in 1753, is the theory that beauty is not arbitrary but rooted in specific, analyzeable formal principles. It focuses on how curved ”lines of beauty“ engage the eye, moving beyond just symmetry to include movement and composition. Such notions of “Analytical Beauty,” also refers to the current exhibition at Neue Galerie, Graz, which concentrates on intrinsic geometric patterns in some of the botanical specimens. Also on view are previously unseen floral depictions linking science and art. #botany #botanical #geometry #flora #bouquet

“When Crystals Spawn Flowers” (2024) Installed in more than 10 museums, Bloom is an exhibition highlighting flowers and their relationship to humans. Bringing together the role of flowers amidst an ecological crisis, colonial aftermaths, and the digital revolution, 35 international artists explore this concept in myriad ways.As we share 30% of our genetic information with flowers, we become aware of evolutionary time. This exhibition invites viewers to pay attention to things that grow slowly, require care, dissolve, and reappear quietly. Keynote Speech with Suzanne Anker:
When Crystals Spawn Flowers Nov. 21, 2025 18:00–19:00 Kunsthaus Graz, Space 04 Lendkai, 8020 Graz, Austria Humans and flowering plants are intertwined in many ways — a connection that has become even more visible in the course of current ecological crises and is manifested in the research of the Vegetal Turn. Flowers and plants become powerful actors whose significance goes far beyond their use by humans. This ‘vegetal turn’ is the focus of the conference, which precedes the Kunsthaus Graz exhibition on the theme of ‘BLOOM’ in 2026. #suzanneanker #sciart #climateart #bioart

The Amygdaloids at Exit Art in Chelsea for the art show “Common Senses” about the art/science interface from Februrary 29, 2008. Love the Rorschach in the background from my “Butterfly in the Brain” series! Thanks Joseph LeDoux for this lovely blast from the past. The image seems to suit the situation perfectly! #SuzanneAnker #BioArt #SciArt #ArtSci #NatureAndCulture #ButterflyInTheBrain #Rorschach #ArtAndScience

As part of its permanent collection, “Origins and Futures IV” (2005) is being shown at MACAM (Museu de Arte Contemporânea Armando Martine) in Lisbon, Portugal. The sculpture makes a nod to A.G. Cairns-Smith’s theory on the origin of life, while also questioning if genes can be sold and patented. After all, much financial speculation is based on investments in certain future scenarios (“futures”), and even human genes may come to be considered a form of ‘bio-mineral’ to be exploited and marketed. #SuzanneAnker #BioArt #SciArt #ArtSci #NatureAndCulture #ArtAndTechnology #ArtAndScience #AGCairnsSmith #OriginOfLife #FoolsGold #Pyrite #DNA #RNA

Suzanne Anker’s “IVF: When Crystals Spawn Flowers” explores onco-fertility and preservation. Through the cycles of nature, Anker examines how science, technology, and human resilience intertwine when fertility is threatened by cancer treatment. The project is part of “A(I) Brighter Tomorrow: Cancer and Beyond” and has been commissioned by curators Natalia Marin and Jodi Moise and realized after a visit to Montefiore’s Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health lab in Hartsdale, which Suzanne Anker visited under the guidance and supervision of Heather Feil. It is important to capture these deeply personal aspects of illness. Anker’s work is a powerful reminder that stories of reproduction and survival are part of the larger conversation about health equity. After a visit to Montefiore’s Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health lab in Hartsdale, where she was guided with care and generosity by Heather Feil, Suzanne Anker observed embryos up close and learned more about the science of fertility preservation and IVF. Inspired by this experience, she returned to her studio and the SVA Bio Art Lab, where she began creating a work that directly engages with the emerging field of Oncofertility, an area of medicine that combines cancer care and reproductive health to help cancer survivors preserve their fertility. The story of IVF can be seen as a powerful metaphor for life emerging after a long, cold winter. Like perennial plants that lie dormant under a blanket of frost, only to awaken when spring arrives, the frozen embryos, once “sleeping” in cryogenic preservation, are brought back to life. After chemotherapy or other treatments, these embryos are “reawakened” and implanted into the uterus, beginning their own cycle of growth and development. It is, in many ways, a resurrection, a return of life, a second chance. Suzanne Anker’s work “IVF: When Crystals Spawn Flowers” is part of A(I) Brighter Tomorrow: Cancer and Beyond, which opened on January 24 at The Gallery of ARTFul Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, Hutchinson Metro Center (1250 Waters Place, Tower One Lobby, Bronx, NY 10461) and remains open through April 18. It can also be accessed via the Bloomberg Connects App (@bloombergconnects ) under The Fine Art Program and Collection at Montefiore Einstein. The gallery operates Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. This exhibition is curated by Jodi Moise and Natalia Marin and was developed in collaboration with The Fine Art Program and Collection at Montefiore Einstein (@montefiorefineart @montefiorehealthsystem ). Everything was made possible through the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies (@bloombergdotorg ), Simone Development Companies (@simonedevelopmentcompanies ), and the Romanian Cultural Institute New York (@romanianculturalinstituteusa ), the diplomatic representative involved. 📷: Lori Adams

. MAKING TROUBLE: WOMEN, ART & SCIENCE The Feminist Art Project TFAP@CAA Day of Panels Saturday, February 15, 2025 – 9am – 4:30pm Hilton Midtown, NYC (in-person, free, open to everyone) Art Historian Linda Nochlin stated that, “feminist art history is there to make trouble, to call into question, to ruffle feathers in the patriarchal dovecotes.” This event is dedicated to women who are troublemakers, and whose creative practice references science as a source of inspiration for writing, research, curating and art making. Suzanne Anker, “My work over the last decades has always relied on the intersection of visual art and the biological/geological sciences...Further along came an investigation into aspects of neuroscience, reproductive technologies and biotechnology. Most currently, climate change is the subject of my work. In each case, my practice is driven by research and writing on these subjects....When I look at science, I look at the metaphors inherent in the scientific dialogue and try to make sculpture, prints, drawings, or installations that can become public and ways in which people can then get enrapt, as opposed to going to sleep by a scientific paper, into what the issues are.” Chair: Anonda Bell (Director & Chief Curator, Paul Robeson Galleries, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey) #sciart #bioart @stephanie.dinkins @hdeweyh    @magdalena_dukiewicz @laurasplan @evaleestudio @micheleokadoner @nwaldburger @margaretwertheim44    #bioarte @genspacenyc @rutgersnewarkofficial @mgsarutgers @expressnewark @suzanneanker @womenscaucusforart @svabioart

The exhibition “A(I) Brighter Tomorrow: Cancer and Beyond” — curated by Jodi Moise and Natalia Marin — features a range of installations, interactive displays and immersive experiences that challenge traditional perspectives on illness and healing. My newest series “IVF: When Crystals Spawn Flowers” was conceived under these auspices and with the scientific guidance of Heather Feil at Montefiore’s Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Health. This set of photographs employs the metaphor of rebirth after frost as a way to poetically picture IVF. The sculptures also capture the ice crystallization necessary for this technique. #suzanneanker #bioart #sciart #artsci #natureandculture #artandtechnology #artandecology #enviromentalart #artandscience @svabioart #frozenembryos #ivf #cancerandbeyond @cancerandbeyond
