📣 New exhibition coming soon! Lost at Play: 500 Years of Fun and Games. This summer, explore 500 years of fun and games at Sutton House! Join us for a display of toys and games which were discovered beneath the floorboards of the house in the 1990s. These items tell the story of the people who have lived, worked and gone to school at Sutton House. Whether lost at play or purposefully hidden, these items tell the story of play across five centuries. Some of these toys are familiar, including a domino, playing card and chess piece, while others, like the gaming tokens carved out of animal bone, add intrigue to the history of play. 🗓️ 17 July - 20 December 2026 🧱 Free with standard admission!

Before screens, kids had toy theatres. Your children can see one — live. And it’s free. Pollock’s Toy Museum brings Dick Whittington and Cinderella to life using original coloured prints made in Hoxton Street from the 1850s onwards. Real performers, live music, tiny stage. 40 minutes of old-fashioned magic. Ages 3 and up — grown-ups very welcome too. One of the things I love most about @nationaltrustlondon places is that history stops feeling distant. And @suttonhousent might be one of the best examples of that. Built in 1535, it’s the oldest house in Hackney and one of London’s last surviving Tudor homes. We visited this weekend and my daughter completely disappeared into the Tudor kitchen for almost an hour. Not because someone was “teaching history” to her. Because she could actually feel it. The old fireplaces, oak-panelled rooms, hidden courtyard, painted staircases and tiny Tudor details make this place feel incredibly alive. And right now feels like the perfect moment to visit because Hackney History Festival @hackneyhistoryfest is happening across the borough — with events, walks and talks exploring the area’s history in a completely new way. If you think London has no hidden corners left… Hackney might surprise you. — 📍 Sutton House, Hackney 🏛 National Trust 📅 Open Fridays & Sundays 👶 Great with kids who love exploring — Save this for your next London day out Follow for real things to do in London with kids #hackney #nationaltrust #suttonhouse #thingstodoinlondon #londonwithkids

I am delighted to share that on the first Thursday of every month I will be creating and holding a space at Sutton House @suttonhousent , in the heart of Hackney, where I live and work and breathe. This gathering is free to attend and open to everyone. The intention is to have a place to gather and rest. And of course open and explore and connect. We are very fortunate to have spaces to hold us, to let us gather in community. I don’t think there is anything more beautiful than a common space that is sensitive to the moment, to the environment and to the particular aptitude of each person present. Over many years, I have found a way of working that somehow creates space. Sometimes through silence, sometimes through poetry and if we are fortunate, through the human heart itself. Anyway, this is a long winded way of saying, you are invited, always and whenever the heart feels called. I suppose this is stating the obvious but I will say it clearly, whoever you are, whatever your interest or background, however much you are suffering or not, Silence at Sutton House will be spacious, freeing, nurturing and grounding. I know the simplicity of magic awaits us. I can feel it in my bones. Thank you to Ludo Gardner @suttonhousent for this opportunity and to the house itself, I cannot wait to get to know you better. Thank you, for having us. To book your place and to find out more please visit the website /silence or follow the link in our bio @pause_place The first gathering will take place on Thursday 4th June from 7-8pm at Sutton House, 2 and 4 Homerton High St, London E9 6JQ. Booking essential. All welcome. Please share with those who may be interested. . . . . . . . #silenceatsuttonhouse #suttonhouse #pauseplace

Over the past few weeks, our volunteers have been sorting through archaeological finds, found during digs at Sutton House in the 90s. These are some of the interesting things they have been organising, including pottery sherds, clay pipes, animal bone and oyster shells.

Come to Sutton House this Friday to see our display of an air raid shelter. During World War II, Sutton House became a shelter from the Blitz for local residents in Hackney. We have recreated what this room would have looked like in winter during the 1940s.
