This module introduces participants to the principles and practice of traditional exterior and interior finishes used in historic buildings, with a focus on linseed oil paints, distempers, and casein paints. Students will explore why these breathable, compatible materials are essential to the long-term health of historic structures, beginning with an introduction to their historical use, appropriate substrates, and performance characteristics. The course will address where and why these materials should be used, how to properly assess and prepare surfaces, and the step-by-step process of application.

The instructor will introduce the lime cycle in accessible terms, explain mineral behavior and microbiology, and demonstrate application of plaster finishes.
