“Oh, Mother’s Day…! This year, yes, I think of my own mother Clara who’s visiting from Colombia, and I love her and bless her, and I’m also thinking of my children - Chris, recently married and expecting a beautiful baby with his wonderful wife Olivia, and our daughter Pam, engaged to be married this summer to another wonderful person we’re lucky to know, Alex. And I’m also thinking of my Grandmother Isabel, who gifted me with the core of my life. But what I’m really thinking about, is how we all mother, how we nourish, love, support, and encourage others.
It’s our mothering instinct, and yes, men have it too, so that’s my Mother’s Day wish - that we celebrate that feeling, that gentle, rewarding, so-valuable impulse to care for each other. It’s why I do Surya, it’s why I help people, and animals and plants - anyone I see in need. It’s all I want to do. It’s why I cook, and clean, and listen, and study. Even my own children - of course I mothered them, I’m their mother!, but it’s more - now they’re grown, I no longer have to pull them forward, they’ve gone ahead of me, and that’s how it should be.
I’m in Kauai as I write this and am reminded of big wave surfers getting towed into a wave, and when they catch that wave, they shoot forward on their own, leaving the jet-ski far behind, going where only they can go… into the future. This is why we all mother - so we can send everyone we care for into a better experience, a better life, and a better world that they can now better build.
