We are slaves of time. Like the life of a flower, Time drains us till we are old, dried up, wrinkled, and then... it proceeds to claim our lives. Time does all that while we are desperately fighting to live knowing we lost the battle against time since the moment we gained consciousness. Time... it can feel so slow, yet its steadiness and consistency, which unstoppable, also makes it feel like it cannot go any faster. Today marks a year since I arrived in Denver, CO, and I feel like I have been here 2 months. If it weren't for the pictures I would not have been able to believe that it had been that long. Time escapes my grip while I see my life passing me by no matter how much I try. I compiled some pics from the year since I got here. Here I am staring at the milky way on April 24, 2018 at 2am. I chose this as my first post because, as I froze my ass off at -10°F while witnessing the magnificent white splash of the Milky Way spread across the unpolluted night sky, I realized that life is so much less than what we make it to be and that happiness is an empty ideal based on shallow unrealistic expectations set by a society that is drunk in its own ego. Today I restart my photography and see where it takes me... Masks... things used throughout history to commemorate or celebrate something relevant in human culture. Not all masks are visible and physically decorated, though. Every day, people leave the safe space of their homes and put on their mask to face their world, their reality. Some say, "what you see is what you get," yet that is only one of the many masks in a billion, or... they are just lying to themselves. Every single person wears masks. Wearing masks not necessarily means being hypocritical, as many fear it might project and they can be in some situations, but mostly, they are a survival tool in human society. Seen more commonly in politics, but they are present in every aspect of daily human interaction. Think about it, are you the same in front of your boss or any figure of authority that has the power to alter your life, and the person you share your life with? Are you the same when face with someone who poses a threat and a family member? Are you the same with a toddler and a scholar? Masks are worn for protection, for gain, for leisure, for stealth and adaptation. .. some may say they are shades or layers of our personality, but if they were layers they would be identical for every different situation, same one for gain, fear, leisure, work... but depending on the situation the mask changes even if the environment seems to be the same. Anyway... this is a very subjective topic and since I am talking to myself here without any other perspective to challenge mine, I shall stop typing before I convince myself I am right. Look at this Monarch butterfly. It changed its form from a caterpillar to a butterfly to fulfill its purpose. To pursue some flowers and get laid before its death. A life lived in a few weeks, all for a purpose that may seem insignificant, but it was its life. Now, look at us... we also evolve, and then, just like the butterfly, troubles and concerns orbit our lives in a constant spin. We learn to live with them as we chase dreams, wishes, and obsessions along with millions of other people trying to do the same, just like the Monarch... just like any other living being. So, what makes us special if life is virtually the same for everything? Ego. To value ourselves more than anything because selfishness is a core human trait, and it shows in every single aspect of our culture and society, in religious beliefs, in political ideals, cultural traditions, and in every small aspect of everyday life, humanity will rationalize any philosophical idea into an excuse to not call themselves selfish, but lying to themselves to justify their existence, is another core human trait. The importance that a subject plays in an image is quite powerful... Humanity sees itself as the main character of life. So... I wonder if that is the main reason humanity suffers from an inferiority complex and tries to compensate for it by creating philosophies that answer questions that cannot be answered to calm down their feeling of worthlessness. Why are we here, how can we prove our existence has a purpose, what happens when we die, what role do humans play in the universe... I dare say every single attempt to answer that question is solely based on speculation and the need to feel we, as humans, are special. But what makes us special? Are we special because 0.001% of the population have been extremely smart people and have created the progress and advancements in technology that 100% of people think is an overall human achievement? What about feelings? But even insects have displayed feelings, so it can't be that either... what about humans display social skills? So do whales and any other species... Probably the only thing that makes humans special is the 0.001% group of people who have created the advanced life we know today. But even then, considering the big picture of the universe... our species will rise and fall, war and make up, and might even self-destruct, and still... the universe will NOT be affected in absolutely any way by anything humanity does, nor will the universe care. My point is... in the desperate race of being a relevant subject in life, humanity has only harmed itself. Memories... things that make us feel young when we remember, or ancient when we account for the time that has passed. Life is a memory, actually, collections of memories. Without them, we do not exist. Without them, would not be who we are. Memories are part of our consciousness, we are them as much as they are ours. Yes... some are bad, some we regret, but the good ones make us feel like life is worth living. Even in death, we still live for a little bit more while those who remember us pass away too. Life is a memory, because once the memory of us is lost, so is our proof of existence. Anyway... posting 2 pics of back when I was learning photography. There is a disconnect between hope, optimism, achievable dreams, and real life. How often do we lie to ourselves telling us we're ok. But what is ok? We are never taught to be ok, just sold on a utopia of happiness that is never fully explained by anyone. We are just left to learn that on our own... and then society complains about the depression index in people. Told to pursue some vague utopic dream while real life couldn't be far from it. Whoever dares to expose this is called a pessimist, as instructed by the general public. Those who preach to be happy with what they have are called conformists, those who pursue the "utopic dream" with passion are called greedy, and those who achieve it are demonized as unscrupulous. As rough as winter may sound, it has such a peaceful beauty. Standing on that frozen lake, looking at the setting sun behind the mountains that obstruct the horizon... I felt happy. It is a beauty that I have missed for more than 2 decades and that I wish I hadn't had to miss in the first place. People yearn for summer, I yearn for autumn because winter is next. Time keeps passing me by and life gets even more nonsensical as it does. I thought I'd get wiser as time aged me, yet I feel dumber at the end of every day. Reason has become a luxury, logic a rare event but stupidity and carelessness overflow my existence. I was told the opposite was gonna happen, but I fail to see it. I always say that hope is free and we can have all we want, but have you asked yourself, "How often do I tell myself what I want to hear? " We travel in time from our birth to our death with absolute uncertainties, yet somehow hold on to thoughts we convinced ourselves to believe only to avoid facing the reality of those uncertainties. "Things happen for a reason," "it was better this way," "it is for the best," "the greater power (whatever the culture) knows what is best for me and this is their will." I could keep quoting endlessly things we tell to ourselves just so we do not face reality, which is: Shit happens, and it happens because humans are twisted. No kid was meant to be abused, no woman was meant to be raped, no son was meant to be sent to a war to die, no daughter was meant to be put down by her husband, no race was meant to be condemed to servitude, used as sacrifices. Shit just happens because humans are awful, as a collective. Individually, though, everyone is a saint, just ask whoever is next to you, and they will tell you how a good person they are.
