✨ Focus On — Zhang JingXiang ✨
Discover the quiet resonance of memory and time through the lens of Zhang (@surou1998 ), a photographer born in Henan, China and currently based in Tokyo.
Blending image and text, Zhang reflects on transformation, identity, and the fragile traces of life as they fade and reappear. His work drifts between presence and absence, where dust, silence, and light become echoes of what once was.
Influenced by both Chinese and Japanese philosophies, his photographs invite stillness and introspection, capturing the beauty of impermanence and the passage of time. 🌫️

Last early summer, I stayed for a few days in the mountains of Jiangxi, China.
As memory softens with time, these rough yet gentle negatives still bring back the cool rain in the wind, the dampness of riverside soil, the warmth of evening light on my skin.
Everything feels almost like a dream.

In January, I photographed the Spring Summer 2026 issue for TOAST, following a day with Hisao Nakahigashi, chef of Sojiki Nakahigashi in Kyoto.
We left early for Ohara, in the northern mountains. Pulled daikon and green onions from the field, found wild onions in the grass, picked rapeseed blossoms just opening. Late January still felt like deep winter—colder in the mountains, with light snow drifting in and out. We stopped for a quick latte by the road, then went further in to forage for matsutake and clubmoss.
Nakahigashi moves quickly, lightly. In and out of cedar forest, disappearing into thick patches of green to gather fern shoots. By the time we headed back, the car was full.
At his restaurant near Ginkaku-ji, he cooked with what we had just picked.
I remember tasting it slowly. Soft, slightly bitter, full of small layers—plants, flowers, something almost like the air of the mountains still inside it. Like he writes: bringing nature to the table, staying in rhythm with it. Realising we come from it.
This season’s theme is “A Shared Table.”
“This season, we consider the art of a good meal and the traditions and daily rituals that help ground and connect us. We celebrate the joy of slowing down and spending time together, and of careful preparation using fresh ingredients served on tableware collected over time.
We explore the spaces in which to enjoy these moments and the sensory pleasures of colour, texture and flavour. Above all, we cherish meaningful conversation over a shared table.”
📚 The booklet will be available in TOAST stores across the UK and the US, free to take.
