ONE YEAR OF FOUR TWENTY-ONE
today is my 22nd birthday but more importantly the 1st anniversary of four twenty-one! i wrote and recorded these songs in my room over a span of several years, and i decided to upload them to bandcamp on my golden birthday because that day felt symbolic. surf dracula was in a very different place a year ago. we had two gigs under our belt: a theater reception at our university and our very own jo’s birthday party, but no actual shows on the horizon. still, i was so excited. i remember that day so vividly: i absolutely bombed a midterm, went to dinner with friends, and finally scrambled to upload those four songs to bandcamp during the final 5 minutes of the night. imperfections and all, hitting “publish” on four twenty-one felt like the start of something new, real, and tangible.
i’ve always been a deeply sentimental person and someone very aware of the passage of time, but surf drac made me even more aware of the fact. our first real show was back in october. we are only 6 months old as an active band, but that first show already feels like a lifetime ago. i’ve changed a lot, but the one constant that has remained is my love for this project and everyone involved. abenie, jo, and edwin, you guys are some of my best friends and i am so so so lucky to pursue this dream with you.
to everyone we’ve met along the way: thank you for believing in us. i say it a lot but i really mean it. i’m a big believer in the divine timing of the universe. i spent much of my late teenage years frustrated about this project; it was one setback after another, and it felt like trying to reach something that didn’t actually exist, but the time came and it’s finally real and greater than i could have ever imagined. surf dracula is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. i don’t know if i could ever thank you all enough.

gonna get personal for a sec and say surf drac is often the only band with non-men in it on a lot of the bills we play. as @loshoundstooth said, it shouldn’t be only in the month of march that we do stuff like this. for the longest time, music felt like a “boys club” to me that i could never be part of. and in a lot of aspects lots of scenes we’re tapped into still operate in that way. if you’re not a man, start a fucking band. get into your local scene and make your presence known, call shit out if you have to. and if that doesn’t work, start your own scene cuz sometimes that’s what it takes for people to care about what you have to say -sav
