This is where surfers finally understand what’s really happening in their surfing.
At PowerSurf retreats, we break movement down frame by frame to identify the details most surfers never see.
Small adjustments in posture, timing, rotation, and compression can completely change the way a surfer generates speed and controls the board.
Clarity creates progression.

Backside Mechanics Training with PowerSurf Drills
I’m working on movements from the PowerSurf Foundation, including the Surf Swing, Gorilla stance and backside snap.
Along with that, there’s also specific hip mobility and strengthening work, all combined into a sequence designed to improve the body mechanics behind surf maneuvers.
The goal is simple: build better movement patterns on land so they transfer naturally into the water.

Most surfers spend years looking for better waves.
Very few spend time learning how to actually surf them better.
Wake up, check the waves, move the body, surf, review footage, talk surf, train, eat good food, recover… and do it all again the next day.
A full week completely immersed in surfing.
Not just chasing waves.
Actually understanding what to do on the wave.
Most surfers have never really been taught how to use their body properly on a surfboard.
How to generate speed from the rail.
How to connect turns.
How to project energy through a carve.
How to surf with more flow instead of fighting the board.
That’s what this week is about.
Good waves in Costa Rica.
Daily coaching.
Video analysis.
PowerSurf training.
Surf skate.
Breathwork.
Cold therapy.
Yoga.
Good food.
Good people.
Good conversations.
And hopefully leaving with that feeling we’re all chasing:
Surfing the way you always imagined you could.

Richie Lovett’s breakdown of Sammy Pupo’s back arm is spot on.
But here’s the problem: most surfers watch this, zero in on the arm, and go try to drive the whole turn with it — before their hips and trunk even get going.
That breaks the kinetic chain. Your hips lock up, your timing goes out the window, and the maneuver loses all its power before it even finishes.
Your board is attached to your feet, not your arms. Movement starts at the hips, travels through the trunk, and the arms finish it off. Get that order wrong and nothing works — no matter how good your back arm position looks.
That’s what’s been keeping most intermediate surfers stuck. Guys who’ve been in the water for years and just can’t seem to break through.
In PowerSurf we call this wearing the board on your body. That’s where it all starts.
Save this and watch it before your next session.
27 years ago I started asking a different question.
Not “how do I read the wave?”
But “what is my body actually doing?”
That shift changed everything.
Body awareness, timing, flow — none of it starts in the water.
What move are you trying to unlock right now?
Early birds for November 2026 ~~ this is where we stay, undisclosed location, we practice surf techniques on land, repeat in the water, film every sessions, your surfing will level up, and your body, mind and spirit will be lifted up! That was last year in November - more info, link in bio 👆🏽@indosurfcrew
PS. This is one of the big days, expect 3-5 ft waves in shoulder season with occasional but less usual big swell like this one
A perna mexe.
Mas o tronco trava.
E quando o tronco trava…
a prancha trava.
A manobra não flui. Fica sempre no meio do caminho.
Agora me fala: onde tua manobra sempre trava?
Agora me diz:
Foi erro dele?
Ou erro do julgamento de prioridade?
Mas presta atenção nisso… Isso não acontece só na WSL.
Acontece com todo surfista.
Você tem dificuldade pra ler o mar.
Escolhe a onda errada.
Fica perdido.
E a sensação é sempre a mesma:
“Eu poderia ter surfado melhor…”
Mas já era 👉 E é aí que muita gente trava.
Se frustra.
Se bloqueia.
Mas a real é que até os melhores do mundo passam por isso.
O mar não é imprevisível. E quem evolui não é quem evita o erro… É quem não tem medo de arriscar.
Agora quero saber de você:
Você é o cara que:
A) senta no pico, lê o mar e espera a onda certa
They called it a “smooth gorilla.”
Most people hear that… and think it’s about style.
It’s not.
What they’re actually describing is something much deeper:
→ a body organized as a system
→ energy stored through compression
→ movement connected directly to the rail
In other words…
no wasted energy.
no forced movement.
just connection.
That’s why it looks effortless.
But make no mistake —
there’s a lot happening under the surface.
Rotation organizes the system.
Compression loads the energy.
Lateral flexion connects it to the rail.
All at the same time.
That’s not style.
That’s structure.
And that structure has a name:
Gorilla — the foundation of PowerSurf.
👉 The moment you stop trying to balance on the board…
and start connecting with it.
That’s where real surfing begins.
Comment GORILLA and I’ll show you how to train this in your surfing.
