A deadname is universally recognized as the birth or former name of a transgender or non-binary person that they no longer use. Using it is called deadnaming, and it is disrespectful and harmful because it denies someone’s identity.
Research from Elek Lane’s "The Impact of Deadnaming" shows that being deadnamed increases the risk of discrimination, harassment, and even physical danger. The evidence is clear: recognition of a person’s chosen name and gender is not optional—it’s a right. 💯
This is exactly why the Legal Gender Recognition (LGR) Bill is so important. Recognition isn’t just symbolic.
It directly affects:

On the 16th anniversary of the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710), the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) affirms its strong support for Legal Gender Recognition (LGR), a vital step toward affirming dignity, equality, and human rights for trans and gender diverse Filipinos.
PCW reminds us that gender diversity has deep roots in our pre-colonial heritage, where it was honored, not erased. The fight for recognition today is also a fight to reclaim this inclusive history. Sixteen years after the Magna Carta’s passage, it is time to ensure its promise of equality reaches all, including those still rendered invisible by systemic exclusion.
Their message is clear: laws and policies must be grounded in dignity, aligned with human rights standards, and accessible to all, free from invasive requirements and discrimination.
