Some framgrabs from the dailies of The Summer Book, by my brother Charlie McDowell. Now out in Danish and Norwegian cinemas! Had one of my best summers ever shooting this film on the beautiful island Rankki i Finland. Love to all who made it so special!
Hear hear! ✊🏼 I support and applaud Women in Cinematography for their activism and constructive fight for change. The statistics presented here are horrific, and sadly not surprising.
Camerimage self proclaimed commitment for progressive change sounds hollower and hollower for each time they release a statement that refuses to clearly distance itself from (the statements made in) the article in question in Cinematography World. A direct and genuine apology, without excuses, seems about right.
Super proud and excited that THE SUMMER BOOK is selected to screen at Camerimage festival this year! Shot on 16mm film on a small island in Finland. Directed by my dear friend Charlie McDowell and amazing performances by Glenn Close, Emily Matthews and Anders Danielsen Lie! One of the best shooting experiences of my career. ❤️
🎬 “Sturla Brandth Grøvlen @supersturla - Creative Freedom in Another Round 🎥
“We shot about 95% of the film handheld, moving a lot between close-ups and almost macro shots, without losing mobility. The lightweight nature of the Canon K35s helped keep everything fluid.” — Sturla Brandth Grøvlen
In Another Round, Sturla’s collaboration with director Thomas Vinterberg resulted in a unique visual style that helped the film win the Oscar for Best International Feature in 2021. By using TLS rehoused Canon K35 lenses, Grøvlen embraced a handheld, raw style that celebrated the beauty of imperfection. 📽️✨

We are proud to present Sturla Brandth Grøvlen as the jury for the MIRAGE Cinematography Award!
The festival hands out each year its acclaimed sculpture awards for Editing, Cinematography, Directing, and Sound Design. A one-person jury decides the award as a recognition from one artist to the other.
Sturla got his international breakthrough with the single-take thriller VICTORIA from 2015, which he received the Silver Bear for artistic contribution at the 65th Berlinale. The same year he received the Silver Frog at Camerimage for RAMS, which shows his range of adapting to story and character. His intuitive and intimate style has attracted directors as Benh Zeitlin (WENDY), Josephine Decker (SHIRLEY) and Michael Noer (BEFORE THE FROST).
ANOTHER ROUND directed by Thomas Vinterberg, was nominated for a Golden Globe, and won the Academy Award for Best International Feature in 2021.
