It’s a book! After months and years of work, if you are lucky you get to hold a thing you made in your hands. There’s no feeling like it. Today I got to hold the first uncorrected proofs of Funny Business and they look fantastic.

The first movies I loved — the movies that made me fall in love with movies — were comedies. I’ve been incredibly lucky to work as a critic for 20 years, and over that time I’ve watched a huge wave of comedy films rise and then vanish. At this point, my favorite genre feels on the verge of extinction. That led to this book, which looks back on the last (?) great era of movie comedies, chronicles how it happened, and considers why it came to an end.

The great @alisonwillmore recently started an excellent new podcast, Critical Darlings, so I needed a new co-host. When I asked my wife to weigh in she said there was only one choice: @jhoffman6 . (Hopefully Alison will come join us as a guest some time.)
