There was a period in my life where I was told I had six months to live. I had a PICC line in my arm, nurses coming to my house every day, and a heaviness hanging over me that felt impossible to shake. No matter what I tried, the clouds stayed over my head. Then something unexpected happened. I started dancing. First salsa. Then karaoke. Then moments where I’d completely forget I was “sick” and just become human again. For a few songs, for a few dances, I could feel light coming back into my body. I could feel my spirit waking back up. 💃🏾🎶 Yesterday reminded me of that all over again. Singing and dancing with a community of people, laughing, moving, sweating, connecting… it felt ancient in the best way possible. Like something humans have always known. Every culture, every generation, every tribe has used music, rhythm, movement, and voice to heal, celebrate, grieve, reconnect, and come alive again. Sometimes medicine isn’t just found in a bottle or hospital. Sometimes medicine looks like: • dancing until you forget your anxiety • singing loud even if your voice cracks • laughing with strangers • feeling the bass in your chest • moving your body instead of sitting in your sadness Music and dance helped pull me out of one of the darkest periods of my life. Music is medicine. 🎶 A few years back, I wasn’t sure how many days I had left, let alone if I’d ever dance again. Fast forward to Coachella… I went in thinking I might last a single day. Somehow, by grace and rhythm, I made it through all three. That weekend wasn’t just music. It was healing in motion. It was my body remembering something my mind had almost forgotten… how to feel alive. Long before hospitals and prescriptions, cultures across the world gathered around rhythm, drums, voice, and movement. They knew something we’re just beginning to rediscover: Sound heals. 18 months ago, this journey felt impossible. A few years back, I was in the hospital at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center… 108 pounds… unsure if I would even make it through the night. But every day, I sang. Not for an audience. Not for perfection. Just to stay alive. To keep my spirit breathing when my body was struggling. That music… somehow… led me to Dr. Brennan Spiegel. And he believed in me before I fully believed in myself. That belief opened the door to this Master’s program. Last night, we finished it at the Sofitel in Beverly Hills. And I stood there… not as a patient… but as someone with a new life. This journey has introduced me to incredible people, deep purpose, and a calling to serve. Now I get to give back… helping others navigate their own healing as a nutrition concierge. I’m grateful beyond words for my classmates, my teachers, my family, and the friends who held me up when I couldn’t stand on my own.
