Most of the reference was rejected because it appeared too confused and matter-of-fact. Instead, we were looking for a bit more soul-searching calmness towards the end.
This was the main reason for the delayed look back to Rio and the decision to put his hands on his hips. These performance choices conveyed that Jeff is finally coming to terms with what he is saying.

📽️#rejectedreference ! This shot from #Netflix's #theseabeast was challenging to shoot reference for because it required a full-body performance and a nuanced approach to capturing Jacob's feelings at that moment in the story.
Luckily, the final shot didn't really deviate from my reference performance. The director and supervisors appreciated the added detail of Jacob wiping sand from his hands, which subtly showed his apprehension about saying goodbye to Red.
The approved reference was chosen because it delivered a stronger performance, and not necessarily because the #rejectedreference didn't fit the motivation of Jacob.

📽️🕸️ #rejectedreference ! We're back to #spiderverse with an emotional shot of Miles.
Most of my takes were rejected because it appeared too sad and pleading. At this moment in the story, Miles is very confident in his abilities. The read was more of a warning than a plea when he says, ".. you have to let me go."
The head shake at the start was changed to angle upwards (against the punching bag) instead of down, and his expression was infused with more confidence rather than worry!

🎬#rejectedreference ! This time, it's from #netflix 's The Sea Beast. We aimed to capture a more flummoxed and confused take for Jacob in the reference. It did evolved from the original take (as it usually does). Throughout the animation process we started to include a more noticeable sigh and an exaggerated head shake.

🎬🕸 More #rejectedreference ! This example wraps up my run of three shots in this sequence. The other references were rejected due to the lack of eye contact with Miles and because we added her eating and holding a plate, which meant less gesturing with her arms.
The final animation differs from the approved reference, as she holds a plate and there are notes detailing when exactly Gwen looks at Miles during the read.
Always let the camera run when shooting reference and experiment with different ideas!

🎬 Behind the scenes in animation can be just as interesting as the final product! I've been chatting a lot about the importance of video reference while mentoring recently. It's often the most time-consuming and frustrating part because we all want to dive into Maya and start animating right away!
Depending on the animation style, video reference is crucial for capturing an authentic performance. That's why reshooting reference material is a big part of the job, leading to tons of rejected footage. We always see the polished references, but what about the ones that didn’t make the cut?

This sequence of shots took a long time and many iterations to figure out and nail down. A ton of collaboration (with Bob Persichetti Alan Hawkins, @siggi_orri and Adam Sarophim) went into realising the comic book stylised way that Miles gets past Miguel. This is a pivotal moment for the fight, sequence and Miles himself. It was exciting and terrifying to be handed this massive responsibility 🤟 It took around 4 months and they clapped in the studio when it was approved 🥹
